We also dumbing down in higher education – widening it did us no favours. Far better to have fewer in higher education but no fees or put back to 3K a year. Doctors & nurses should be trained for free, or with a small bursary BUT expected to give 5-10 years to the NHS. If leave before then, have to pay the cost of training back.
Training elsewhere also more expensive. Because paying more, far too many places given to overseas students rather than to British citizens who want to be doctors. More applications than places.

The NHS does not deserve to have doctors. Like every other employee in existence if they can find a better deal elsewhere, they're going to leave – these are just basic market forces. Like is the case for any company if you don't incentivise people by offering competitive terms and conditions then you can kiss your employees goodbye. None of this 'force them to work for 20 years in the NHS' bollocks is going to fly. I thought you GB news viewers were freedom loving free market capitalist, not enforcers of a communist gulag?

Doctors don't need the public, the public need doctors. The NHS is end-stage anti-capitalism whereby the demand for doctors is going up and up and yet due to perversion of normal market forces the wages are going down. The inherent monpolised nature of a system devoid of market freedom meant it was designed to fail eventually, regardless of whichever tosser is happens to be in government. The reality is that the government and public have had doctors and nurses on the cheap for many years now and that there is an entitlement to their labour. We are now seeing that that is not going to be the case any longer.

It should be noted that the doctor shortages that cause the poor early-career working conditions is of the profession's own making. It's the same reason why the UK doesn't train anywhere near enough of its own people.

As with every other profession that had a shortage solved by increasing the number training places, by the time the new programmes graduated their first students, the increase in supply dramatically reduced starting salaries. This happened for vets and opticians in particular, but also for audiologists, etc. The medical profession could solve the working conditions and the shortages, but that would reduce pay, so they actively work against increases in the number of training places. The medical profession is the last to be opened up.

The training, working conditions, and pay are widely known. If they don't enter for the money, then please explain why they're always complaining about the money? IMO, if you want to become a doctor for the money they should give the training place to someone else.

GBP100k in debts after doing a five-year degree is not out of the ordinary, and doctors get better pay than most. Dentists and vets have more debts and far greater costs of establshing a practice.

And doctors fail to say that many have private practices in addition to their full-time NHS positions that dramatically increase their earnings, and forget that their residencies are not only paid positions, but positions in which they receive postgraduate training (for free).

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

Just ask how so many people on the minimum wage manage

  19. @rightherethereeverywhere

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

So you want the public to pay for that? You made the choice, the same as the rest of us who went to uni and left with debt. You know the salaries you are paid will help you pay it off quicker than most.

  20. @chrisspencer6502

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

I'm willing to bet that's a conservative number. A graduate degree is 70+k with residential then a masters and other post graduate courses.

  21. @ULTIMARAGNAR0K

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

100k of debt because of credit cards…. Education in UK is 9k per year or free if you’re Scottish. The student fees are paid off via your income at 9%

  22. @h.r7050

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

I seriously don't get it why our government is so soft on them – tell them all to go private – they won't be able to!!!! First of all, they are so poorly trained, they won't survive. Secondly, private hospitals like Nuffield Health or HCA work on the principle of 'renting rooms or facilities' – doctors have to find their own patients, operate on them and then pay whatever is due to the private hospital for the facilities – NOBODY WILL BE GOING TO SEE THEM, young ones with no experience. Same goes for private GPs. Noone in their right mind will go and see a private GP to be prescribed paracetamol and water and to have symptoms googled. Tell them – choose private or NHS, end of, can't combine the two. Conflict of interest. They won't hack it in 'private sector' two days.

  23. @a.hoctavius5848

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

Whereas in Germany and France they graduate with 0 debt. The amount of medical school seats for the entire country are centrally allocated. Only the best of the best make it. These doctors accept lower pay relative to the US or UK, because they have no student debt. And they tend to stay in their country because their own system works so well

  32. @nigel.w

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

Please be honest! What is the average debt for someone who's just completed a five-year degree? NB. Most professions now require a master's degree, so many more professionals are now completing a five-year degree than used to be the case. And the training period or work experience required for full registration in most professions has also increased. Then ask about entry-level, mid-career and senior salaries. Then ask about the average working week for most professionals. And you'll find that doctors are still getting far better terms than most! Sure, early-stage working hours for doctors can be very high and unsociable, but that doesn't last. And many professionals, especially early-career professionals, are working long hours. However, many consultants and others have private practices that can dramatically increase their earnings, which isn't the case for most other professions. Quite frankly, I'm sick of hearing about doctors complaining about pay. There are few professions where average earnings are as good! And there's no other profession that has as much unearned respect and real power over people's lives, both for good and for BAD! But if you become a doctor because of the money, I would strongly argue that you're the wrong person to become a doctor! My only sympathy is that the working hours and lack of sleep that many junior doctors face is something that should be addressed as it is surely a barrier for many who would make good doctors.

  38. @jimbrown2688

    December 24, 2023 at 11:12 am

These junior doctors need to stop complaining and make their minds up. They know exactly what qualifications are needed to become a doctor and that'll rack up debt and it takesyears to qualify. They know this for an absolute certainty. They know junior doctors need to do long hours for a certainty. They know there is a pay scale. £29,000 for a start isnt bad. They know once fully qualified they can earn at least £75,000 a year. If they specialise they can earn £150,000 a year. Thats long term high earnings. If they want no debts don't start a career in medicine. Its their choice. No one i mean absolutely no one forces them to embark on a medical career…Not happy with medical career responsibilities and debts then dont go down that road…

Watch as Will Kensington expresses concern about the state of the UK, arguing that Downing Street is no longer a place of power but has instead become Britain’s most expensive Airbnb.

This comes as Andy Burnham is set to become the UK’s seventh Prime Minister in a decade, with seemingly no one challenging the “King of the North” for the country’s top job.
