These are utterly asinine arguments as to why Labour and the Lib Dems don't win more seats. Name recognition for cabinet-ministers is utterly meaningless, because they're not running on a national ticket. Boris Johnson's name-recognition does not help him outside of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, and since he won the constituency with 52.6% of the vote, beating labour by 15 percentage points, chances are good when he steps down that he will be replaced by another Tory. The notion that voters are too stupid to know who their local candidates are, or what party they're on, or what issues they care about is laughable on the face of it. If you can't be arsed to find out who's running for parliament where you live, *why did you bother to show up to the polls*?

The ability to call elections "when it suits them" is another bit of sophistry. Parliamentary elections happen every five years, regardless of whether it's convenient for the sitting PM or not. Getting some minor leeway in terms of the specific day when the vote takes place isn't significant.

And your "central government leverage" argument also fails to convince, since the Mayor of London doesn't vote in Parliament, and therefore has no influence on whether the Tories or Labour can form a government. Likewise your Towns Fund example does not withstand even casual scrutiny. Newark, Robert Jenrick's seat was captured with 63% of the vote. Jake Berry took Darwen by nearly 20 percentage points. These are not, as the Honorable Jim Hacker used to refer to them, as "marginal constituencies".

The "splintered left" vote is the least inaccurate of the reasons offered, but it too is unsatisfactory, because when you look at most seats which are held and won by conservatives, they hold comfortable majorities which can withstand a unified opposition should Labour and the Liberal Democrats unify for some as-yet unfathomable reason. Of course, the problem with this opinion is that the Lib-Dems are more ideologically aligned with the Conservatives, which is why they formed a coalition government with Cameron. If one were to simply eliminate the Lib-Dems as a party, you'd squeeze out at least as many new Tories as you would Labour.

My point here is that all these excuses dodge the real issue: The Conservatives are more popular, mainly because their opponents have, since the resignation of Tony Blair, have shown themselves to be an even bigger load of crazy, inept ideologues.

Voting is just for show. There are big powers behind of why Conservatives will always win. Its not the voters choose. Everyone hate Tories but they still win the majority of votes.

Labour could always form a an electoral pact with the Liberal Democrats and form a Labour-Lib Dem coalition providing both parties do well in the next general election.

  33. @jackmellor5536

    December 22, 2023 at 9:55 pm

You could apply this to the SNP in Scotland. It's unlikely they will lose an election until they get their own way with Scottish independence. All they do is blame everything on Westminster and sell the Scottish voters the snake oil that everything will be OK with independence.

  34. @alandillon968

This just shows how corrupt the UK is, we have no right to"finger wagging" at other countrys. Our voting system now allows for a democratic dictatorship with the Torys passing the baton from leader to leader.
Labour have let the public down with bad, lackluster leadership, little vision or new ideas and sbove all guts to stand up and be counted on its belifes. They dropped a second referendum, they dropped renegotiating a new policy with the EU. They refuse to support the workers, not supporting the Trade Unions so they wont isolate themselves but they miss the point. The Torys have done exactly that and "pined there policies to the mast" and getting the votes. Labour needs to show its vision and grow some balls.

First past the post voting system will continue this Tory rule. We need a proper Proportinal Reprisentation system (not the "set up to fail", hobble together, complicated system Cameran came up with that made it inevitable people would vote against it). There are plenty of good Praportinal Representation systems to "buy of the shelf" for us to use.
Maybe if Labour is kept out long enough, they will realise there smal mindedness is getting them nowhere and work with other party to get in then change the electoral system to Proportinal Representation hooe they don't make it their main or only big policy!!
How can a modern country call itself a democracy when millions stop voting because they "feel it's a wate of time", those who do vote become disenfranchised at every election because of wasted vote. How a who country within the Union (Scotland) are disenfranchised at every election. If it was in place Scotland would have an electrol voice and no need to leave the UK but Labour still ignores this issue. The Torys are happy to see the Scots go independent because the Torys don't get their votes, so they are of no value to them!! Ths is called democracy in Britain…shameful!

Tories are a dying breed, quite literally, and you can't sell capitalism to a geration who will never own any meaningful capital…..The tories are doomed long term.
