The Irish Border and the Irish Sea Border have been pretty contentious since before Brexit even started making changes – but in recent weeks things have become even harder. So to try and solve those problems Britain seems to just be… well ignoring them? In this video we discuss the changes Britain is attempting to make to the Northern Irish Protocol, the EU response and how this whole issue could be solved.

I don't understand where trade rules became an issue for Brexit. Did brexiteers really want hate EU rules so much? The key issue I thought was immigration? Its seem like an opportunity grab to me. I know UK politicians like to do deal behind closed doors and that is more difficult with the EU, but was it a voter issue?

Crazy stuff, I am an Australian and find it very hard to fathom the reason for Brexit. The UK is having its balls stretched as it trys to make a trade deal with Australia and other countries know the UK has to start making trade deals to make it look like it has the world at its feet. The EU is one the marvels of the last 1000 years. If I import anything from the UK and it has to go via EU forget it. It has to be unloaded checked reloaded, delay delay. The UK is now just another country to the EU. I will never import anything from the UK that has a chance of going through the EU. I have closed my door to the UK. Crazy stuff. Who would be stupid enough to vote for Brexit?

  15. @pilgrimpaulo

    December 22, 2023 at 10:58 pm

The EU used northern Ireland as a political weapon andpawn to frustrate the Brexit process.

Once sovereignty has been gained we have freedom to fine tune issues. That it plays into the volatile tensions between 2 opposing communities was a cynical master stroke of the EU commission barons.
    The arm wrestle must continue.

Remember, the UK is Southern Irelands main importer.

Daddy what is Brexit meaning, That means the food shells in shops got more and more empty, Expats become illegal immigrants,  it will be dead cheap for mainland Europeans to go weekend shopping in England and daddy got his first UB40, son. suspect there will be a referendum on the NI protocol in the next year or 2. and if it goes through, the reunification process will take at least 5-6 years to complete, this will happen at some point, and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. in the meantime, there's one thing I don't understand.. on what planet does it make sense electing a creationist with 14'th century views to government? (I don't live in the north, but I live in Ireland, like everybody else on this island does)

The question what to do with the only land border with the EU is quite a fundamental part of the whole Brexit and it is shocking that the 3 options for resolving this weren't part of the referendum on Brexit. The options should have been: 1) stay in the EU 2) leave EU but remain in the ESM by joining EFTA 3) leave the EU and have a customs border between NI and the rest of Britain 4) Create a customs border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
I fear a lot of people who voted pro Brexit would not be able to choose between 2 3 and 4 as they don't want any of those options. Maybe go for option 5) invade Ireland to make it part of Britain (again)

My grandson is fifteen months of age now. Time for his parents to subtly and lovingly begin to teach him that autonomy comes with responsibilities. What a pity Boris's parents have failed to do the same to their toddler, who will now always remain in a state of immaturity. Luckily potty training appears not to have been beyond his intellectual capabilities.

Of course, the only reason the UK needed Northern Ireland was the Derry Quay. It was the only place on the British Isles where Submarines could come inland while submerged…. The modern reality of War means that now has little or no value…. What Downing Street wants/needs is for NI to have Sien Fein in the political majority and have an independence Referendum. And Win.. then an independent NI can do anything it would like as far as unity with the south or rejoin Europe, without the severe political overspill to London….

  39. @Kramlets

    December 22, 2023 at 10:58 pm

Boris goes to the country of Ireland, talks to people and gets used to their culture and their way of life, and then proposes that the UK and Ireland combine under the common name of "Ireland". We would scrap the monarchy and issue a new government.

That keeps the nationalists happy, and allows us to move forward on a whole other number of issues. They would need to figure out a way to align their policies and laws though.

If they were to be like "well yeah, that's a bit silly," they could even come up with an entirely new name for the UK.

  40. @molagsballs

    December 22, 2023 at 10:58 pm

Our free movement agreement with Ireland has absolutely nothing to do with the EU. It's unacceptable that the EU would suggest we discriminate against the Northern Irish simply because the EU disapproves of a deal between two sovereign countries.

  41. @benjamincharlton3774

    December 22, 2023 at 10:58 pm

I sense a bit of bias in this video. The EU's desire to protect it's borders was not called an "obsession" but the UK's was.

  42. @royalmason1539

    December 22, 2023 at 10:58 pm

The EU's business is to protect the integrity of their union. The UK's business is to untangle their rat's nest of political alliances and become a functional country, now that they've separated themselves. This whole Irish problem was more than predictable, it was inevitable… yet, the English ignored it. So, let the English figure it out and let the Scots, Irish, and Welsh go whatever way they feel is in their best interest. Usually, a country has to loose a major war to loose homeland territory. The English have found a way to wreck their economy and give up as much as a third of their country to successions, without firing a shot, or being shot at. Congratulations to Brexit England! We applaud your ingenuity!
