For some of these ingredients they should be allowed to use bulk prices on a per unit weight basis. For example, Mike should have been allowed to use regular dry rice instead of the packet because a big bag of rice, while a larger up front cost, lasts a long time and per serving costs very very little. Anyone trying to stretch a budget should be looking to buy dry goods that will keep well (like rice, dried beans, oats, flour).

I say this with all due respect because I absolutely love this channel, but Mike's outfit makes it look like he just finished his shift at Baskin Robbins.

Another budget battle idea would be a sequence of budget battles. Let's say 3 or 4 budget meals spread out over a month, each with a specific theme, and with a single budget they have to spread over the entire month, but they only know the first theme. This could for example solve the issue where they buy just a packet of rice at a higher unit price, since they could buy a bulk package which in the long term would be cheaper.

I want them to do a budget battle like this, but using a different country's product prices, because what might be considered cheap in the UK, might be quite a bit more expensive in a different part of the world.

Watching this two years later: "Jay… that amount of bacon is about a fiver, a jar of marmalade, 3, curry paste another 2,50… a bag of peanuts: add 2, rice noodles about 1,50. So that's 14,00 at least. And cooking it all up? About a million pounds"

A really close battle and honestly, the overcooked noodles and undercooked potatoes are hard to nail, but damn Mike nailed the most difficult one of the three I think

can we get prices on each item? some of these I'm like how are they getting that for under 5

To be honest, I don’t think bulk ingredients should be priced at full price, because it defeats the purpose of budget meals in the first place. I’ve seen other channels do it for reasons. The vast majority of us aren’t going to waste $2 on a packet of ready to eat rice when a full on pound of the dry stuff is $1 for the expensive Basmati. Baz couldn’t swing for a $2 bag of flour, so instead he’s springing for like 2 tablespoons of flour for $0.35 (that’s what the cheap packet gravy costs at Aldi). The amount of flour he’d need for a roux would be negligible. It’d take a slightly longer amount of time, which would then be a realistic midweek consideration. Do you spend the extra cash on packet ingredients or do you make extra cleanup/time in doing from scratch? Depending on how much I’ve got to spend, that’s gonna change. Also, for the record, you can indeed use butter for a roux, but I’ve made perfectly good vegan ones with oil and flour, and it does the same job.
