In the UK, everything is a money making enterprise, not just a fair profit but rip off profits. Then these people refuse to enter the 20th century. They are not keen on developing any new infrastructure. So you have Victorian railways and narrow horse and cart routes as so called roads. The population keeps increasing and more and more cars are being added to their horse and cart routes which mean heavy , daily traffic jams and a railway infrastructure that keeps breaking down on a daily basis which results in these people getting late for work. Their country is way backward compared to France or Bulgaria. These people get what they want. They elect clowns and get a joke transport infrastructure. Very sad.

British trains are good. If railways are not profitable or used, they can be replaced by buses or short flights.

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

They were private to begin with then nationalised during WW2

There was also a big issue when they privatised the network causing the operators not to be able to meet their requirements

In fact the network company went broke

Railways must be state owned because this is a plublic service.

MT has done a lot to destroy good public service.

I think it was her mission.

Incorrect. The Railways are not privatised. That is an illusion to allow the DFT to call the shots while blaming others when things go wrong. In so far as passenger numbers going up that is inspite of government policy, not because of it. For example, overcrowding on Cross Country has been known about for years yet no attempt is being made to solve it. The DFT decides on the train numbers and staffing levels.

  14. @aoneill

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

This video totally fails to discuss the effects of subsidy. This government has been year on year reducing the amount of public subsidy on railways and over expecting operators to improve efficiency beyond the capacity of the network. This withdrawal of funding especially damages investment in the network and underinvestment gradually means services will get worse as infrastructure problems and understaffing prolems increase. You clearly see this happening and with the high fares you do wonder whether rail travel is worth the risk. This is a governmental issue not an industry issue. However, making profits on subsidised services does seem quite bizarre. There is only one way to get this right and that is one accountable and transparent provider owned by the public.

  15. @nigelkthomas9501

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

Get rid of the hideous arrogant greedy unions and life on the rails would improve massively. They are the so often the thorn in the flesh and the primary reason for privatisation in the late 1990s.

UK rail travel is appallingly expensive now. It's truly shocking that it can have come to this. It's reached the point of not being worth going anywhere by train

  21. @stuartfitch7093

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

It's not just small towns and villages in Scotland.

Here in rural Lincolnshire you need to use your own car just to get to the nearest train station because all the small rural lines and their stations were closed long ago. In fact many of the old stations are now repurposed as homes.

The bus services are like trying to find the proverbial dodo bird as the private bus companies that run the services in the region are cutting, not expanding services. This is because of things like government cutting subsidies to the bus companies to provide services so the bus companies cut the route because it's not earning them enough profit.

In this environment, with all the best will in the world, his can we ban diesel and petrol car sales in 2030? They are an essential part of life for anyone out here. Just to work you need a car. To buy a bottle of milk you might have to drive, like my parents, over 9 miles one way to get to the nearest supermarket. These are all narrow country lanes with no street lighting or pavements that bisect farmland and rolling green hills so using a bicycle or walking is not even an option.

  22. @sarahwagland1559

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

I took voluntary redundancy from British Rail in something like 1992. It went from a strict environment where you had to present your used pencil in order to get a replacement to an anarchical environment where timesheets and expenses were fiddled, BR property stolen (even large items like a drawing board) and little work performed. People got promoted who should not have been, probably even myself.

  23. @davidk6264

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

NZ was forced to renationalise its railway system after privatisation , after private companies ran it down.

  24. @rogofos

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

I think the government shouldn't be afraid to increase public spending on the railways to some extent
as a prospective British tax payer I'd be ok with more of my taxes going into that if it is necessary to ensure high quality affordable services for everyone in the country

  25. @markharris1223

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

What on earth is the title of this video supposed to mean? I have never seen a railway employee sucking anything on duty, apart from the odd Fisherman's Friend. On the other hand, I certainly noticed that privatisation ushered in an era of courtesy towards passengers in stark contrast to the bloody-mindedness of British Rail employees. I remember dreary five-hour journeys by steam-train from Manchester to London before privatisation. I also remember the Holyhead boat-train which was only marginally better than a cattle truck. Chronic underinvestment during the British Rail era has taken decades to put right.

  28. @romitkumar6272

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

So basically the railways were still under state control because of how strict the contracts were. It was the government's fault, but they blamed it on the companies and then basically renationalised. And people still blame the private companies for the poor performance of the railways, even though the government was and is in control and refused to allow them to do anything to fix all the problems

Nailed on greed from a party that wrecks a country through the same ultimate threadbare reasoning that they can't help the illness they've got ! By the way sonny the Tory party privatised everything not just the train network! Get it reet the Labour Party were responsible 4 making it a country owned business that worked ! We are still picking up the bill by paying 4 the greed that's prevalent!

I have been on a number of trains in Japan and S Korea and they are amazing… And I have no doubt the UK rail probably does suck in comparison with rail on the Continent… But if you really want to have a sucky train ride, visit the US.

  38. @f-22r

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

I recommend watching "Why are Britain’s trains so bad – could nationalisation fix them?" on this subject.

  39. @Cjbx11

    December 20, 2023 at 9:33 am

The basic problem is that the railways don’t make money and never have done and it doesn’t matter who runs them. All I would say is whatever people think of the railways now it certainly wasn’t any better when BR ran them. BR were an absolute joke.

Railwayys are biggest and most used source of revenue to Govt. If privatised all goes to politician friends and relations who form these companies in Railway operations and harvest all profits.

'British Rail' was so much better than the money grabbing, couldn't care less, unacceptable face of capitalism companies we have running trains nowadays in the UK.
As with many of the other privatised former state owned companies especially energy sales……it's a broken model operating in an artificial market.
Let's hope 'Great British Railways' will be an improvement…….my suggestion would be for the government to pay the Swiss to operate train travel in Britain!!

  45. @nicksmithauthor
