Why do some women wait decades for an ADHD diagnosis? – BBC News
Gender bias is leaving many women with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) undiagnosed, leading psychologists are warning.
The stereotype that ADHD affects only “naughty boys” means it is estimated tens of thousands of women in the UK are unaware they have the condition, and are not receiving the help they need.
Another factor leading to slow diagnosis is the fact that symptoms of ADHD in women tend to be more subtle than in men, meaning signs can be missed.
These women have shared their stories of their struggle to be diagnosed.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News
Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

I am male and got diagnosed when i turned 35.
My diognosis came from cambridge University at addenbrookes hospital over a 6 month period.
Misdiagnosed by doctors through the years, given medication that i should not have been given.
Its a difficult condition to have not only for you but for colleagues immediate family and anybody in-between.
I have a very respected and responsible career that i have worked tirelessly over the last 18 years to establish and tomorrow i am in a meeting with group HR for resonable adjustments to help me have a competitive edge within my chosen career.
ADHD certainly with my 48 years experience is a very lonely condition often being ostracised for being differnet, bullied in the workplace, financial impacts, relationship turmoil the list is quite endless.
Its ok not to be ok and i wish everyone of my fellow brothers and sisters of the adhd community every success in the future.
Should anybody need any advice then please drop a comment here and i will try to offer you avenues you could explore,
Stay safe folks and have a fantastic Christmas and New year

This is where I have a problem with this issue- about all of these women suddenly getting diagnosed at the same time after being on social media….. For me though it must have not been that bad to get all the way to 20 to 30 to 40+ years old without having your life fall apart or some crisis that forces you to have to go to a psychiatrist or treatment etc….. I was diagnosed with severe ADHD- Hyperactivity type when I was a young teenager… I had already been having obvious problems- been seeing a psychologist and an adolescent medicine doctor but what finally led to a formal psychiatrist and test was, was me almost dying of alcohol poisoning as a young teenager…. After that my parents fired the psychologist took me to the psychiatrist etc….. but that’s what I mean something that brings you to your knees, I have also been brought to my knees quite a few times since then too. That’s what I mean how did they get this far in life without something like that forcing them to get help?? What has them get help is watching a video on social media… so tell me how all of these thousands of women being diagnosed in the same time frame is not in some way a social contagion rather than women actually struggling with adhd- type inattentive?? AND most of all of the people being diagnosed now are not being thoroughly tested!

Rectify that title from "women" to people instead, ADHD is a real issue, not linked with gender at all

All of these women's stories are so important to hear. I'm about to turn 40 and believe I have ADHD. I've been waiting a year for an assessment and I'll probably wait another year at least. But at least this kind of information is out there to help me understand, process and do what I can to help myself. Thank you to everyone involved in this 🙏❤️

It’s true. I knew something was different with me as a kid, I knew it was something that held back my progress at school and work. I thought I was just dumb or dyslexic, I had my son and he was diagnosed with adhd and dealing with his symptoms showed me that we had the same symptoms at the same milestones.

I was diagnosed at 46
When I heard about ADHD I realised this is me, but when I called the doctor, over the phone with some questions he said I might have it but I needed a proper assessment, eventually he called ands said 'the consensus here is that as you've got to 46 years old, running a successful business, then you don't need a diagnoses' I was so disappointed I spent £££ on an assessment and got diagnosed
I do feel let down and wish I'd known sooner

In the UK I meant to say – catching up on the US where it was seen in earlier decades (JFK junior was on Ritalin from age 3 I believe). I am 65 today and have not yet been able to persuade my GP to get me on a waiting list but it only dawned on me that I might have ADHD a year ago – there is other evidence in my family tree – all undiagnosed of course but behaviourally it makes sense. I recommend Additude magazine online articles to help with strategies because strategies help even if you don't get acknowledged.

I'm still waiting for a diagnosis. I've been diagnosed with many other things instead, with each shrink claiming the others were wrong and they were right, and all eager to get me on drugs that didn't help and gave me other side affects instead. It's been such a pain that I gave up and have opted to instead suffer. I tried again recently because I'm struggling and ran into some situations because of it. And though this shrink was willing to give me drugs that wood help, I can no longer take them because at this stage I'm now a candidate for worse things if I do take them. I got really angry at all those other therapists that were too arrogant to help me because I thought of all the things I've missed out on, all the dreams I've had and things I could've done. But I'm not giving up or letting myself be depressed about it, so basically I don't think about it a lot. I just wish therapists would not be so arrogant and listen to their patients actual issues, and get out of the way of actually helping. I know there are lots of great ones, but I ended up with crappy ones.

I'm a 23yr old woman and my GP refused to refer me/couldn't get anywhere with the NHS so I went to a private specialist clinic that researches ADHD earlier this year, which is where I got my diagnosis.
However I've had to return to NHS to ask for treatment but cuz my diagnosis was made privately/not made by the NHS I've been waitlisted to be potentially diagnosed a second time.
Something really needs to be done to scrap the stereotype, as it costed me a lot of gaslighting and people refusing to fill out forms when I was taking my assessment with the private clinic, "You can't have ADHD cuz you're lazy, you're moody and when it comes to sleep you take ages in bed" is what people told me. Even I didn't recognise I had the disorder, I believed I was a normal person who was just never good enough.
The subject of me potentially having ADHD first came up when I was in secondary school, me and my school friends laughed cuz we thought it was a load of rubbish cuz I don't fit the stereotype.
Second time was when my mum found an article about how it affects women, she wanted me to read it. I kept putting it off cuz I wasn't interested but when I did she asked me what I thought about the symptoms—to which I said "There weren't any symptoms in that article" and she answered back with "Yes there were, and it's as if this article is describing you", I got mad and shouted "No mum, I don't have ADHD!!" at her (Well those words of mine aged like fine wine 😂)
After describing myself to friends and strangers and them telling me "Sounds like you have ADHD" was when I finally started to think "Okay, maybe I do have ADHD" and sought assessment
