Why former Uganda dictator Idi Amin expelled thousands of Ugandan Asians – BBC News

Published

on

It is 50 years since Uganda’s former-dictator Idi Amin expelled thousands of members of the Asian community from the country, after accusing them of disloyalty.

They were given just three months to leave, or face being placed in concentration camps.

About 27,000 people left their homes for the UK, many of them were British passport holders.

Those settling in Leicester, England, have become part of the fabric of the city.

It’s ironic seeing the same people who praise Idi for deporting Asians and Israelis because they didn’t “assimilate to the culture” criticizing Israel just for making it difficult for a Palestinian to become an Israeli citizen. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Indians were a few percent of the population and dominated 90% of all sectors of the economy. When Uganda gained Independence from the British, only 25,000 Indians chose to take up Ugandan citizenship, the rest wanted to maintain their British colonizer identity.

Israel-Palestine all over again. "But the Palestinians were there for 2000 years and did nothing to the land. We came along with our superior selves and within decades – with the help of the West of course, were able to turn this place into something thriving…".

Meanwhile in the 1970s India was dirt poor.

History is now showing us that the East African expulsion of British subjects from other territories in the former Empire actually did have an argument.

In a nutshell. Yes White people can do some cool things, and yes Indians can do some cool things, but Africans also do a lot of cool things. However, everyone who isn't Black is so fearful of giving Black people a chance.

Thankfully it's 2023, and Black people are getting a chance. The result of this of course is record-breaking academic results in the UK & USA without sacrificing any physical & athletic qualities.

The western ideology is an upside-down meritocracy. You've got America with the Indians at the top and the African-Americans at the bottom. Indian wins in the Western world, but the Western world loses against China. I guess winning is winning to some people, even if it is for the betterment of your enemy's team.

The Ugandan Asian expulsion was a life-changing experience for many, and even causes tension amongst communities today. Although I am South Asian, and my mother was expelled from Uganda, I believe a lot more awareness needs to be raised about the large number of Ugandans that stood up for South Asian rights against this oppressive regime, that native Ugandans suffered from the most. To reduce the event to Ugandans vs South Asians is a mask and excuse for the overarching conflict at the time; hate vs love. Also, the British were reason for South Asian presence in Uganda in the first place, as our people were transported from the peninsula to build transport, and entirely used for the empire's economic benefit. Once again, British communities that welcomed South Asians into the country, deserve a mention, and my family's utmost gratitude.

As an Indian, I want to appreciate the UK for taking in the refugees from dastardly Idi Amin's pogroms. Yes, there are always going to be racists, but the East African Asian community has went on to be successful, so successful in fact that the current British PM is a descendant of one of them.

So sad!! The Indians in Guyana faced the same situation in the 1960s by Burnaham & the PNC. The Indians in Guyana were raped, tortcher, murdered, their houses were burnt down and had to escape Guyana by all means such as land, air, water. Most Guyanese Indians were not allowed to go to University in Guyana. To this day in Guyana the Public sector is about 90% Afr-Guyanese, the University of Guyana Administration is run by about 85% Afro-Guyanese and they are still depriving Indo-Guyanese to attend the University of Guyana.

To the africans who complain that asians discriminated against and them and treated them badly, I'm sorry but if you allow a foreign group to treat you badly IN YOUR OWN COUNTRy, then yo are second -class and deserve to be looked down on. You think africans could go to another country and hate and treat the citizens there badly? Don't know some africans behave like they are dumb.

Asians have the nerve to say it was a racist move when at the same time they were being racist against the people who are indigenous to that country. They treat Black people in the US poorly as well. Good for Idi Amin. He put his people first.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
