Russia has positioned some 150,000 troops close to Ukraine’s borders, according to US President Joe Biden and now the Ukraine defence ministry.
They include about 30,000 troops taking part in military exercises in Belarus, and are equipped with everything from tanks and artillery to air power and naval support.
US officials say Russia has the troops in place to invade Ukraine “at any time”.
But Russia denies it is planning an attack and accuses the West of hysteria.
Newsnightâs Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban reports from Kyiv.
Heâs joined by the US Ambassador to Nato Julianne Smith.

UK expected to announce sanctions on Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank | BBC News
The UK is expected to announce sanctions on goods and services from Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied West Bank.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is due to announce the move in the House of Commons on Tuesday afternoon, having previously said the UK-Israel relationship will be âresetâ.
The settlements are illegal under international law and the UK’s move comes as Israel opens tenders for 1,200 new homes in the occupied territory.
US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee said the US opposes the UK imposing sanctions, and he told the BBC that US states could retaliate against the UK.
