You Had So Much “POTENTIAL”… So What Happened to Your Life?

Published

on

Why do so many people reach their late 20s or 30s with a decent job, income, relationships and a functioning life — yet secretly feel like they have failed?

Why does someone else’s promotion, marriage, foreign job, new house, salary package or success suddenly make your own life feel smaller?

video explores the psychology of feeling behind in life, social comparison, self-discrepancy, failed expectations, career confusion, identity crisis, quarter-life crisis, ambition, regret, success anxiety and the painful gap between the life you imagined and the life you are actually living.

When we are young, many of us quietly create a timeline life.

“By 25, I will have a good career.”

“By 30, I will be financially settled.”

“I will have my own house.”

“I will be married.”

“I will become successful.”

“I will do something big.”

Then life actually happens.

Careers change.

Exams fail.

Relationships end.

Parents grow older.

Responsibilities appear.

Money becomes complicated.

Plans get delayed.

And one day you look around and realise that the person you thought you would become by now does not exist.

The strange part is that your current life may not even be bad.

You may have a job.

You may earn reasonably well.

You may have people who love you.

But then you open LinkedIn, Instagram or WhatsApp.

A school friend gets promoted.

A college friend moves abroad.

Someone younger buys a house.

Someone gets married.

Someone starts a company.

Someone earns three times your salary.

Nothing about your own life changed.

But suddenly it feels insufficient.

video begins with the famous Olympic medal research by psychologists Victoria Medvec, Scott Madey and Thomas Gilovich. Their work showed a surprising pattern: bronze medalists could sometimes appear happier than silver medalists.

Why?

The silver medalist may think:

“I almost won gold.”

The bronze medalist may think:

“I almost won nothing.”

The result matters, but so does the comparison point.

The same thing happens in everyday life.

₹1 lakh per month may feel good until you discover your friend earns ₹3 lakh.

A stable marriage may feel perfectly fine until social media constantly shows extraordinary romance.

A respectable career can suddenly feel disappointing when you compare it with the life you once imagined.

The video also explores psychologist E. Tory Higgins’ Self-Discrepancy Theory.

There is the actual self:

Who you are today.

There is the ideal self:

Who you hoped you would become.

And there is the “ought” self:

Who you believe you should already have become.

That word — should — creates enormous psychological pressure.

“I should have been settled by now.”

“I should be earning more.”

“I should have cleared the exam.”

“I should have married by now.”

“I should have achieved something bigger.”

But who created that timeline?

Your parents?

Your school?

Your friends?

Society?

Instagram?

Or an 18-year-old version of you who had almost no idea what adult life would actually look like?

Sometimes we are not unhappy because life is terrible.

We are grieving an imaginary life that never happened.

The career you did not choose.

The business you never started.

The relationship that did not survive.

The country you never moved to.

The exam you never cleared.

The body you never built.

The version of yourself who was supposed to become extraordinary.

And because that imaginary person never had to deal with real life, he is impossible to defeat.

He never made a wrong decision.

Never lost money.

You are comparing a real human life with a perfect fantasy.

Of course reality keeps losing.

The Indian context makes this even more intense.

We grow up hearing:

“कुछ बड़ा करना.”

“Settled कब होगे?”

Many Indian adults therefore do not merely carry ambition.

They carry an invisible deadline.

And when they miss that deadline, they begin to believe they are falling behind in life.

But there is another uncomfortable possibility.

What if your life is not a failure?

What if it is simply ordinary?

A normal career.

A normal salary.

Some mistakes.

Some successes.

Would that life feel acceptable?

This video does not argue that ambition is bad or that you should simply accept everything.

Sometimes people genuinely need more discipline.

Because one of the most exhausting ways to live is to spend your entire adulthood competing with a version of yourself that never existed.

If you are interested in psychology, psychology in Hindi, human behaviour, social comparison, feeling behind in life, quarter-life crisis, career confusion, identity crisis, success, ambition, self-discrepancy theory, anxiety, stress, mental health, Indian youth, life expectations, regret, underachievement, self improvement and personal growth, this video is you.
