Is England set to reverse the ban on building onshore wind farms? – BBC Newsnight
Former cabinet minister Simon Clarke has tabled an amendment to the Levelling Up Bill that would overturn a planning clampdown on onshore wind introduced by then-Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015.
The amendment has support from two former Prime Ministers, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and the government has denied the Tory Party is split over the amendment.
But is there enough public support for the plan? And do people want to see the turbines being built in their neighbourhoods?
Science and Technology Correspondent, Kate Lamble reports on the impact onshore winds turbines will have in England.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News
Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.
Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.
At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.
So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?
AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.

If we want energy security then they must be primarily onshore.. Reason: there's little we can do if Putin decides to sabotage offshore windfarms.

Combustion engines won’t be sold after 2030,vehicles will be electric. New houses will be built with EV charging points. Yet there is no plan to generate electricity via the easiest, cheapest, quickest method….onshore turbines !!! Nobody complains about pylons, radio masts, telegraph poles, cooling tower or skyscrapers.NIMBIES are illogical. Most appliances in their homes run on electricity.Russia holds us to ransom. Change is inevitable.Get on with it.

Welcome to the new green deal comming to a backyard near you!! They are ugly, loud, and don't last. Then left disabled to rot, as it takes millions to take one down!
But the true benefactors are miles and miles away and could care less about our back yards!!

People want cheaper bills and green energy but then don't want to infrastructure built to deliver it. Can't win!! It's funny because they don't blink an eye at a huge ugly pylon in the landscape. Sooner or later, it blends and and the mind adjusts to it. Just accept it and get building them

What,produce energy quicker and cheaper,that we don’t control…….no way !
Let’s use millions of the peasants money and make them wait for 10yrs before the nuclear reactors produce any energy.

The windfarms don't generate enough electricity compared to their cost and the co2 generated in building them, the government would be better off putting solar on all new homes tied to the grid and getting councils to put solar on council homes, putting roofs over parking bays and putting solar on them, we should also be building nuclear power stations.

Here’s a suggestion: Why not change the design of them. Make them look like the traditional Dutch windmills, or like the sails on a sailing ship – or get some designers to make something artistic that people would be happy to see, and then we can work on the efficiency and other problems later.

Have you seen the price of electricity, open some coal fired power plants NIW. Goddamn boomers having the best of it then ruining it for everyone else. We should be paying under a penny for several KWH from nuclear not 40p per kwh. My electric bill is insane and 25% of it goes to stupid 'green concerns' The climate cult are vile misanthropes.

They are pretty useless kill countless birds. You can’t recycle the blades so to landfill. Only economical if using tax credits. Intermittency issues as energy can’t be stored.

If the wind farms were within or near an inner city or surrounding a deprived area they would be put up over night, country pile creating due to being able to see them a mile or two away same as solar farms these well to do little village’s create saying eye sore, their motto build them high and massive but not near us it will reduce the value of our property

"Stop wind turbines"
Ok so nuclear?

Worried about birds? If we don't reduce CO2 and plastic there won't be any birds… Or mammals… Or fish… Or humans.

After wasting 5 minutes on propaganda,
As the BBC can't seem to give both sides of an argument, for balance here's some counter arguments
Wind farms are;
Not efficient
No wind, no power
Kills birds/ environment, lots of noise
All turbine blades cannot be reused and have to be scrapped (Google it)
Ruins the landscape

Is it just Nimbyism? We’ve all witnessed the extent to which The Brexitory Establishment is owned by the fossil fuel lobbies. It’s why we’re subsidising their vast unearned profits via a deferred tax.

When cheap wind energy is sold to the consumer for the same price as expensive gas produced electricity, why should the consumer care about the environment and accept wind turbines in the landscape? If the consumer could see a tangible benefit from wind turbines in the form of lower electricity prices I'm sure support for wind turbines would increase. The same is true of domestic gas production being sold to the consumer for the international market price, when in reality because of pipelines it can only be sold to the UK domestic market. The UK needs to take a long term strategic view of energy production and reform the energy market accordingly as well as take measures to reduce demand through insulation, solar PV with battery storage and continuing to covert all street lighting to LED and only turn on street lighting from dusk to 1AM.
