With the volume of fake news growing and the severity of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, many are beginning to question if we should have anti-fake news laws. Should the government regulate the internet to stop the spread of disinformation, or would such a move mark the beginning of online censorship?

I've given this some thought, and I see the cracks in outlawing "manipulative news": it has THE greatest of intentions, and if done right, would be good for the world. The problem is this is how stalinist dictatorships start. One quote I love is this: "The truth is like a lion: You don't have to defend it. Let it loose. It will defend itself." This quote is made by St. Augustine from what I gather. The only alternative is to challenge your beliefs to where you are uncomfortable. Find your own truth, and do it in the most scientific way.

Concept is easy. Bad news is who is in charge of the government. They will make it a one party state as they don't want anyone to dare to challenge them, especially in public.

Unfortunately fake news, disinformation, and misleading is a way to censor people who do not agree or makes government look bad. We do not know which is which.

I don't necessarily like the idea of controlling speech… The Russian example has been particularly damaging in practice.
Still… I think that the need for some action is too great for us to do nothing. It's a very tricky issue but we do need to combat disinformation somehow as it's not likely to go away on its own.

Fake news can be extremely dangerous to the safety of citizens. There has to be humble beginnings to make rules to stop or fine fake news . Those few countries have done a good thing to regulate fake news .

Someone should regulate "fake news", I just don't think it should be the government…. maybe a separate arm of it, something akin to the judicial system

  17. @rosslomath

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Fyi TLDR, your caveat shows your lack of investigation and can therefore be seen as fake news… Every country/government that have implemented these laws has used it for political advantages or suppression of information…

  18. @silvervixen007

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

I do think there should sth done against false information. Not necessarly with a ban, but creating news outlets that are providing less sensationalized news and are not sponsered by political parties or companies

  19. @KermitFrogThe

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

    Nice idea. Impossible to enforce.
Consider most spam is illegal, it is also the largest component of internet mail. Not that people haven't tried to eliminate it or that some of the biggest perpetrators haven't been fined, but the financial benefit is so high it's worth the risk.
Fake news makes money for people, they will get people literally paying them for nonsense scar mongering, and that makes it the same as spam.
I wish I was wrong on this, if people can prove me so, I would be incredibly happy.

Covid-19 info is a disinformation move . I,m an inspector from the aircraft industry and have been following the Covid-19 info from the beginning . Many news services are showing information all over the place . Even the federal government ; stopping and starting reporting of the quantities or not reporting quantities over the weekends until monday . Or sporadically updating the quantities almost all over the clock . This is a type of parallel to complaints spoken during and after WW11 about wrong info or no info regarding quantities , times, government projects etc .It's not easy to imagine the minds that think these things up .

  22. @johncasey5594

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Who decides what is fake news and what is not? That is the problem. For example, remember when Trump proclaimed the Obama administration had spied on his campaign. The leftist mainstream media and FactCheck sites claimed it was fake. Today, we know it was true. The best thing to do is have no censorship and allow responsible people who are concerned with current events and based on their historical knowledge of current events to make up their own damn mind what is true and what is fake, what they want to watch and what they don't. That is the only fair way to do this.

  23. @misfit2022

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

It might end the The New York Times after almost 170 years and The Guardian. The latter of which supported protests on March 8th saying it was perfectly safe. Was it perfectly safe? You decide.

During my time working as an economic analyst in Edinburgh(7 years), I had to deal with the repercussions on our business from Fake News(misinformation & disinformation) issued and spread by the UK government. Our company had to mark off the MANY hours I had to spend with clients, politely refuting the out right lies the UK government spread about Scotland and any consequences of restoration of independence. At one point I started wearing my Militsya uniform in meetings with clients to ensure they understood I was "quite a serious person". I dislike such "arguing from authority" displays. But for some people it really was required.

The point here is that the UK government is torrent of such "fake news". It always has been. Leading to, particularly with the English, a seriously distorted World view. For example how English people seem to think they are equal players in the World alongside, USA, China, Japan, India and Russia. Or how negotiations between the UK and the representative of the EU countries is somehow one of equality. Rather than a dog (the UK) versus a rhinoceros(the EU).

  28. @Erik_Aegir

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

no, because if so all contrarian development and challenging or controversial facts would be censored – remember when scientific consensus and the political elites said that the earth is flat? Oh! Yes the scientist was also burned at the stake.
The elites of today is the same, and the fake threat about fake news are just a tool to legitimate censorship

  29. @crazy9932

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

We can regulate it at an independent means. We let the u.n make laws that govern policy of how countries act with another, there is nothing wrong with giving them this chance for a trial run. However there is a problem. We have bad actors in some countries that are at un that just dont care n trill, this will b issue here as well

  30. @Wei2321L

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Wow, I didn't know that according BBC's definition, BBC is precisely fake news lol!

  31. @benjones1717

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Teenage me was a big reader and repeater of fake news – I don't think it was because I was a moron, I knew there was a lot of bullshit in the dailymail and times, limited, partisan etc. I knew Icke was only 3% not insane, but at the same time he was talking about pedophile celebrities way before everyone else. The issue is with people who read mainstream news and think it's wonderful, but for many it's prejudicial. To clarify fake news is out of control, but there is really no clean newspaper either.

  32. @WanderTheNomad

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

We shouldn't, and probably couldn't, outright take down the "fake news", at least in America. It should be left up for public view, but officially tagged as fake news along with evidence/explanation of how it's fake and what's the real situation.

  33. @BobQuigley

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

let's start with pro intelligence laws?

  34. @Joshua-ew6ks

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

If you give the government the power to determine truth; they will lie to you.

  35. @Joshua-ew6ks

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

There should never be a law against Fake News. NEVER! Because who determines what is fake or not. But the people that can determine what is and is not fake news, can just say make their own truth, to push their own narrative. Youtube is already doing this.

They will take anything down that conflicts with what WHO says. And if Who is wrong, it doesn't matter. They are now the god of truth (but they are not) regarding this virus. And no one can question it. Even if Who latter comes out and said there were wrong. YouTube will just move the goal post and you have to conform to the new truth. This is the problem with fake news laws. Because this has already happen. But many will not believe it. Oh well.

  38. @johnspaul92

Fake news has existed before. its these internet platforms that are blowing things out of proportion. The moment you read/watch something, these platforms keeps suggesting related stuff aggressively, irrespective of the content. They want to make money by keeping you engaged and dont care about the consequences or the content. This could be easily fixed by taking away the protections that these platforms enjoy if they present stuff in a non-chronological order or through non-public algorithms (from subscribed sources or others). It would prevent these fake articles from blowing out of proportion without taking away any kind of freedom from any publication. People will be still allowed to publish and enjoy their freedom of speech. Further, users will still be able to seek out any kind of news if they want. At the same time it would prevent unsuspecting people from falling into the fake news blackhole.

If there was LAWS .. for FAKE NEWS… Great that means NO MSM. End BBC, sky , chan, 4 5, Believe the BBC or sky .. if I don't ?? Make a law then you Scummy Rats..

  41. @johnr8813

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Cigarettes weren't banned, but each pack carried a warning. We should default to liberty to speak as we defaulted to the liberty to smoke but remind people that they can't believe everything they hear. I wouldn't support banning anyone for speaking what they considered to be the truth. Silencing people who believe there's a conspiracy only proves them right anyway. I'd also prefer to not live in a society that has its opinions so carefully monitored and controlled.

  42. @vickersy2058

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

most mainstream media in US make fake news! how to prevent.

  43. @marcom9103

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

You fail to mention that the main media outlets may push governments with their influence to use fake news laws as a racket to protect them from smaller independent news organisations from entering the market. I also feel like this may lead to regulators turning a blind-eye to mainstream organisations but over-scrutinising outside news organisations.

  44. @cj930

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

At this point, if you’re not being deplatformed or worse, you’re probably not a real journalist.

  46. @ericvulgate

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

the answer to this issue is education, not censorship.
once we establish that our rulers can decide what is 'fake' they can use that remove anything they don't want us to see.

  47. @pistolpeetlokk

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

Anyone who thinks fake news should be illegal should think things through , IF SOMEONE HAS CONTROL OVER WHAT IS FACT AND WHAT IS FICTION , they can't control everything

  48. @iAmTheSquidThing

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

I find it very unlikely that 5G damages our immune systems. There's no evidence that it does. There's no known mechanism by which it could. And there's no correlation between 5G coverage and virus outbreaks.

But it's a reasonable thing to ask questions about. Many things we believed to be safe turned out to be dangerous: Asbestos, thalidomide, leaded petrol, tobacco. I'd be very worried about criminalising people for being paranoid. Sometimes those people are necessary.

  49. @David13ushey

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

So here's a thought. Have web browsers give a 'fidelity rating' for posts, articles or videos. The ratings would be given as the average of 5-7 different fact checkers. 10 would be completely accurate and 0 would be completely false. The metadata for each rating could be flagged with what each fact checker flagged in regards to the post. Fact checkers could go back and change ratings as more evidence is put forward either showing a site as more or less accurate. A post could also have a NR, which tells the viewer that the source hasn't been reviewed for fidelity. Browser algorithms could prioritize those sources with the most reviews and highest averages, preventing one '10' review from gaming the system and encouraging a variety of fidelity. Put the fidelity rating on the upper left corner of the browsers so that it's easy to spot. Reviewers would be accredited by a country's FCC, and because more reviewers are more heavily rated, it would be harder for corrupt governments to game the system.

The result should be a few sources with high fidelity credit scores, most in middling 7-8's, a few lows, and then NR for people who don't even bother to get their sites reviewed.

This would at least inform the viewer. Adding punative damages could be added later.

  50. @plantfuelled8912

    December 24, 2023 at 10:52 pm

The problem is most news is true. The lies are in the omission of facts. One side of the argument sells, and a balanced factually accurate account is boring, doesn't polarize opinion and doesn't attract clicks or ad revenue.

Another problem is if deciding who is to ban fake news. Imagine if Trump were to choose the 'fake news action team'?
