In May 1097 the First Crusade reached its first Turkish city: Nicaea, capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. Seven weeks later the crusaders woke to find the Byzantine emperor’s banners already flying over its walls. Two weeks after that, at Dorylaeum, they met Turkish horse archers in open battle for the first time — and very nearly lost.

Part 4 of THE FIRST CRUSADE — the war that should have failed, and the collapse that let it succeed.

Krey’s own verdict frames the episode: after Malik Shah’s death in 1092, “the Turks were so embittered among themselves that they refused to make common cause against the invaders.” Godfrey’s axemen cut a road and marked it with “iron and wooden crosses on posts”; Fulcher found the bones of the People’s Crusade “beyond Nicomedia.” Kilij Arslan’s relief attack was beaten off; a mined tower fell and was rebuilt overnight; the emperor’s boats were dragged over the mountains onto the lake. Then the city surrendered secretly — to Alexius. Raymond of Aguilers: “as long as they live the people will curse him and proclaim him a traitor.” Stephen of Blois: “in five weeks we will reach Jerusalem from Nicaea, unless Antioch resists us.”

At Dorylaeum on 1 July, Bohemund’s column was surrounded. Fulcher: “such warfare was new to us all … like sheep shut in a pen.” The women carried water under the arrows; the priests “weeping, they sang, and singing, they wept.” Then the second army arrived, and the Gesta’s author admitted he had never seen better soldiers than the Turks.
