Near to you in France, that is the terroir best ever walnut in the world: les Noix de Grenoble.
It is not a trend at all, it's almost kind of cheesy here, exept for vegans of course, to cook with nuts because it's part of our gastronomy fun ages. We got a long story cooking with them in salt and sugar disches.
And it is aviable where is all kind of nuts like we got Le gâteau creusois, terroir southern france, almost composed half flour half hazelnut powder and white eggs
You can find cheese rounded with crashed nuts, chicken and else stuffed with nuts based "farce" (forgive my english please), most likely wild animals. From Italy we also got hazelnut butter cream witch is fantastic!

Why do you keep pointing out that it's a seed as if that means it's not a "nut?" Do you also talk about cocoanuts, almonds, and pistachios the same way? Do you only call true nuts like acorns "nuts?"

From what i remember, walnut trees are actually quite aggressive. If you try to grow a different try around them, theyll still nutrients and put micro posions in the soil to help limit competition for resources. Fasinating trees honestly

It seems the ultimate irony to me that yall seem slightly unfamiliar with the walnut, when here, EVERY walnut meant for crackin and snackin is labeled as ENGLISH walnuts lol. On a tangent- are yall familiar with the beast known as the black walnut?

That is interesting that you did not know a lot about walnuts. In poland where i’m from it is very common, and i used to grow up close to many walnut trees 😅 i have a memory of me and other children in my kindergarden eating walnuts from our kindergardens garden 😅 walnuts (in my opinion) taste the best fresh without the bitter skin (you can peel it of when they are realy fresh)

And then there are the many classic walnut desserts of Central European cuisines (e.g., Hungarian) such as the Gerbeaud cake or a sort of pull-apart bread coated with ground walnuts, sugar and custard, and so on. Pity there's a pest now, a kind of fly which bores through green walnuts and makes them rot, so it can't be harvested.

We had a walnut tree in our garden where I grew up. Been wondering for a long time why there are only walnuts from California in the supermarket but couldn't find any local ones🥺

Would love to see more Caucasus/ central Asian cuisine on here! Georgia was the first thing that came to mind when you said walnuts, so glad you included dishes 😄

One note about the origin of Walnuts. There are actually multiple species in the Juglans genus all of which produce edible walnuts. Most of the ones you find in stores come from Juglans Regia or the Persian Walnut/English walnut but other species are also cultivated. Some like the Eastern Black Walnut (which is native to North America east of the mississippi) actually thrive in colder weather. I had 2 such black walnut trees in my yard growing up and we would gather and dry the nuts each year. Very slightly different from the Persian walnut but ultimately just as good. Plus getting like 20lbs of free walnuts each year is a pretty nice perk.

Afghans have an amazing walnut dip that’s essentially blended walnuts, garlic and vinegar and a little salt. Optional parsley or coriander. It is amazing as a topper or a salad dressing. I love it on top of some white fish or just using some Afghan naan to dip in it!

We have walnut trees here in Switzerland too and there is one near where I grew up and we used to run to pick them from the ground before anyone else did. One of my favorite nuts both raw as well as in dishes (love muhamarra, pesto with walnuts is great too!). Happy you highlighted walnuts 🙂
