9/11: Who won the war on terror? | The Global Story
September 11 marked a shift in the American psyche, and altered the way the United States saw its place in the world. Shortly after the attacks, President George W Bush announced the ‘war on terror’, a policy that would implicate the United States in multiple wars, on multiple fronts, in the Middle East over the next 25 years.
But was this the US reaction that al-Qaeda had planned for? And as the US entered into more wars, in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran, are the unintended consequences of the ‘war on terror’ still threatening the US today?
The Global Story’s Asma Khalid speaks to Frank Gardner, the BBC’s security correspondent, about the event that still dominates US foreign policy today.

UK sanctions Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank and other news stories | Global News Podcast
The UK has announced a ban on goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. France, Canada and nine other European countries will do likewise. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband accused the Israeli government of turning a blind eye to what he described as the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians by Jewish settlers and said its inaction was undermining the possibility of a two-state solution. In response, the Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar has said that Israel is shutting down the UK consulate in Jerusalem and expelling British representatives from the International Gaza Support Centre, among other measures. Mr Sa’ar said Mr Miliband’s statement was a series of outrageous lies and amounted to a blatant interference in Israel’s upcoming election.
