📆 The Muhammad Ali Act Boxing Reform Act was enacted 26 years ago today.

TKO Holdings (Parent company of WWE & UFC) are a major driving force behind the current challenge to amend the bill following the creation of Zuffa Boxing.

Mike Tyson has publicly supported the bill, stating. “The Act does not alter the opportunities of those who are comfortable with the current system; it simply adds options for fighters who wish to pursue a different path that better suits their career goals.”

Lonnie Ali, widow of Muhammad Ali and co-founder of the Muhammad Ali Center, voiced her support of the bill, saying that it would add “some much-needed competition” into the governance of boxing.

Nico Ali Walsh, a professional boxer and grandson of Muhammad Ali, stated that he opposed the bill.

Oscar De La Hoya publicly opposed the bill, saying that TKO would use UBOs to gain control of boxing.

Evander Holyfield issued an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal to oppose the bill in November 2025, stating that UBOs were “private leagues” and that “a company could control every part of the league”.

He stated that UBOs would be used to create UFC-style control over the sport of boxing.

Oleksandr Usyk vs. Mairis Briedis was a professional boxing match contested on 27 January 2018, for the WBC and WBO cruiserweight championship.

Following their respective September 2017 quarter final victories against Marco Huck and Mike Perez, it was reported the WBSS semi final between Oleksandr Usyk and Mairis Briedis would take place on 27 January 2018 in Riga, Latvia, a week before Murat Gassiev vs. Yuniel Dorticos. Arēna Rīga was confirmed as the location by Kalle Sauerland in early December.

Usyk came in at 199.5 pounds and Briedis weighed 199.1 pounds.
