Budget vs Premium: Can We Actually Taste The Difference?
Can you actually taste the difference between budget and premium ingredients… and is the expensive version really worth it?
In this blind taste test, we put cheap vs expensive ingredients head-to-head to find out where the extra money really goes. Is it better flavour? Better texture? Better sourcing? Better ingredients? Or just better branding?
We tested 4 Categories in real dishes:
Sesame Oil in Yukhoe
Frozen Garlic Bread with Pasta Bolognese
Rogan Josh Curry Sauce in a Lamb Rogan Josh
Granny Smith Apples in a Crab Salad
Some of these products looked similar. Some had wildly different price tags. And some premium ingredients came with all the right claims; handcrafted, hand-picked, natural, Michelin-linked, high-quality sourcing, traditional production methods. But once it came down to the actual tasting… could we tell?
Along the way we look at:
– Whether premium ingredients really deliver more flavour
– What to check on labels before you spend extra
– Where cheaper ingredients often cut corners
– Which products are worth upgrading
From Japanese toasted sesame oil to Michelin-linked curry sauce, this is a full budget vs premium food taste test to find out what’s genuinely worth paying for.

Mike and Chef James are racing against the clock to cook an incredible dish, but there’s a massive catch: their equipment and ingredients are getting randomly deleted.
At random intervals, a ruthless random generator selects vital kitchen items to be removed. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. Knives, ingredients, appliances, pans, and even the hobs – absolutely nothing is safe.
Every few minutes, they must instantly pivot and adapt their recipe on the fly. Can a home cook and a pro chef survive the ultimate kitchen sabotage, or will they be left with nothing but a single wooden spoon?
