Stepping into the shoes of the greatest meant more than just looking the part. Will Smith put in the hours, sweat, discipline and dedication to transform himself for his role as Muhammad Ali in ALI (2001).

From intense boxing sessions to mastering Ali’s movement, the Fresh Prince star underwent a brutal, year-long boxing and fitness transformation under the guidance of trainer Darrell Foster.

• Duration & Intensity: Smith trained 5 to 6 days a week (sometimes up to 7 hours a day), starting with a 3-to-5-mile run at 6:00 AM, followed by hours of boxing drills, heavy pad work, and sparring sessions.

• Weight & Muscle Gain: He gained about 30 to 35 pounds of pure muscle, climbing to Ali’s competitive fighting weight of around 210 pounds.

• Altitude Conditioning: Foster took Smith to Aspen, Colorado (at 10,000 feet elevation) for intense altitude training to simulate the oxygen deprivation of going deep into the later rounds, such as the 14th round against Joe Frazier. Smith reportedly collapsed to his knees during the drill.

• Real Sparring & Technical Coaching: Smith stepped into a genuine fight camp, sparring with real professional boxers like James Toney, Michael Bentt, and Charles Shufford, taking actual punches to build authentic ring habits. He also received technical guidance from Angelo Dundee, Ali’s legendary cornerman, and studied Ali’s distinct footwork, low “snake lick” jabs, and vocal cadence
