Why has Benjamin Netanyahu had to prove he’s alive? | The Global Story

Published

on

Why do people think Benjamin Netanyahu has died?

Social media platforms have been flooded with the wild rumour that Benjamin Netanyahu is dead (which he is not).

Fake photos and videos of his body, coated with dust and debris, seemed to show that the Israeli prime minister had been killed – during the US-Israel war with Iran – in an Iranian air strike.

The rumour was false – Netanyahu had not died, nor been involved in a strike. The photos and videos were AI-generated. But when Netanyahu posted several videos of himself, debunking and mocking the rumour, some people on social media still refused to believe these were really him.

Today on The Global Story podcast, Thomas Copeland from BBC Verify explains how the economics of social media drive the creation of AI-generated fake videos – sometimes by people with no strong feelings about the war itself.

And we speak to Peter Pomerantsev, author of ‘Nothing Is True and Everything is Possible’, who says the essential strategy behind wartime disinformation remains unchanged since ancient times.

New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

Published

on

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has apologised to a court for forgetting about biography briefing notes she gave to an aide, in her privacy case against the Mail on Sunday’s publishers.

The Appeal Court heard she had asked an aide to pass on information to the authors of a biography – despite having earlier said she “did not contribute” to the work.

Meghan said she had forgotten the events and had not intended to mislead.

Associated Newspapers is trying to overturn a ruling after it published a letter from the duchess to her father.

Meghan, 40, won her privacy case against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday earlier this year, when the High Court found its publication of the letter was unlawful.

Iran-US peace talks fail to reach deal as Washington issues ‘final offer’ | BBC News

Published

Vice-President JD Vance has said that the US and Iran failed to reach an agreement following lengthy peace talks in Pakistan.

The delegations met in Islamabad during a temporary ceasefire.

Vance said the US “could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms”. Halting Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been a “core goal” that wasn’t reached.

Iran’s foreign ministry says the talks were “intensive”, and called on Washington to refrain from “excessive demands and unlawful requests”.
