PM warned of ‘reputational risk’ over Mandelson’s Epstein links | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Files released by the government show the Prime Minister was warned of a ‘reputational risk’ about Peter Mandelson’s links to Jeffrey Epstein before he was appointed US ambassador.

Alex and Chris have been combing through the files since they were released this afternoon. Together with James they go through what we’ve learnt, and what it means for the Prime Minister.

The BBC understands that Lord Mandelson’s view is he answered questions about his relationship with Epstein in the vetting process accurately and that he believes he has not acted criminally, did not act for personal gain and is cooperating with the police.

Plus, Alex and James speak to Simon Jack about the International Energy Agency’s decision to release more than 400 million barrels of oil in a bid to ease pressure on the market caused by the war in Iran.

Iran War Today: BBC reports from inside Iran | BBC News

Published

As the war in Iran enters its 48th day, the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet reports from the country’s capital, Tehran.

It comes after talks in Islamabad between the US, Iran and mediators in Pakistan failed to bring about a deal over the weekend.

The White House says discussions around a possible second round of peace talks between the US and Iran are “ongoing” and “productive” – but no time or place have been confirmed. The two-week ceasefire is due to end on 22 April.

US President Donald Trump said today Israeli and Lebanese leaders have agreed a 10-day ceasefire.

Killer’s family and authorities could have prevented deadly attack, inquiry finds | BBC News

Published

The Southport murders could have been prevented if the killer’s parents and authorities had acted in the years leading up to the attack, an inquiry found.

It is “highly likely” the attack would not have occurred if various agencies had dealt with the killer’s behaviour earlier, the inquiry also found.

Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6, were killed during an indiscriminate knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop on 29 July 2024.

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer who called the inquiry’s findings “harrowing” has promised to make “fundamental changes” to keep the pubic safe.

The killer, who was 17 at the time, seriously wounded eight other children and two adults in the attack. He has since been sentenced to at least 52 years in prison.
