Before pills and prescriptions,
people believed the air itself could make you sick.
Cold air.
Night air.
Bad air.
So they tried to clean it.
Vapo-Cresolene sat quietly in bedrooms and sickrooms.
A small flame underneath.
A dark liquid above.
As it warmed, it sent a sharp, smoky scent into the room —
meant to disinfect the air,
meant to protect the lungs,
meant to bring comfort when there weren’t many answers.
People believed that smell meant safety.
Mothers used it when children coughed through the night.
Hospitals used it when illness lingered.
Homes used it when fear hung heavy in the air.
