The first of the funerals victims of the Bondi Beach shooting has taken place in Sydney, thousands gathering to mourn Rabbi Eli Schlanger.

He was among 15 people killed when two gunmen opened fire on a festival marking the first day of Hanukkah. Australia’s prime minister said that the attackers appear to have been inspired by Islamic State group.

Rabbi Schlanger, who was known as the “Bondi Rabbi” and had helped organise Sunday’s event, was born in the UK. His wife gave birth to fifth child just two months ago.

Children fall victim to lethal Marseille drug gangs | BBC News

Published

on

In Marseille, locals talk of a state of panic and terror gripping the city. Rival drug gangs are now using automatic weapons in their turf wars – and using teenagers too.

The number of children involved has risen sixfold in recent years. Many are forced into debt, beaten and threatened.

The city’s prosecutor called it a kind of slavery. Among the latest gang-related deaths, a fifteen year old boy was shot in the head and set on fire.

French police are carrying out what they call “bombardments” of certain areas, trying to drive the dealers out. But the trade is being amplified on social media – where drugs and gang jobs are routinely advertised.

Bondi Beach dashcam footage shows hero couple tried to stop gunman before being killed | BBC News

Published

on

A couple killed in the Bondi Beach shooting tried to stop one of the alleged attackers by grabbing his gun, dramatic dashcam footage shows.

Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61, courageously stepped in to try and protect others before being shot themselves, their family said in a statement.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness,” the family said.

The Gurman couple, who were Jewish, were the first two people killed in Sunday’s attack, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in the shooting, which happened during an event to mark the first day of Hanukkah.
