Chanel Spring 1999 Couture, designed by Karl Lagerfeld, was a breath of fresh air for the iconic house. For the first time, Lagerfeld removed black from the collection, replacing it with a soft, pastel-heavy palette that created an ethereal, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Floating tulle and organza added lightness, while metallics replaced traditional dark tones, offering a forward-thinking edge.
This collection balanced Lagerfeld’s expertise in flou and tailoring with a sense of softness and sportiness. Sculpted gold bags and abstract silver earrings brought a modern, tech-inspired touch. The sherbet-colored taffeta gowns worn by Devon Aoki, Colette Pechekhonova, and Esther Cañadas were among the highlights, with one even making its way to the Oscars via Uma Thurman.
