What is the Chagos Islands deal between UK and Mauritius? | BBC News

Published

on

The UK has signed a £3.4bn ($4.6bn) deal to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while retaining control of a UK-US military base on Diego Garcia – the largest of the islands.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the 99-year agreement to lease back Diego Garcia will cost the UK £101m a year, and is necessary to protect the base from “malign influence”.

Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam said the agreement completed “the total process of decolonisation”.

But UK opposition leaders – and some Chagossians now residing in the UK – have criticised the deal.

The community that might hold the key to treating cancer | BBC News

Published

A rare genetic condition that causes people to grow much shorter than average could help scientists understand how to prevent cancer and diabetes.

About 840 people worldwide have Laron syndrome, a rare condition that prevents the body producing the growth hormone IGF-1 – and many of those live in a small region in Ecuador.

Researchers studying this community have found that people with Laron syndrome appear to have much lower rates of cancer and diabetes, raising questions about whether their genetics could help develop future treatments.

Scientists hope understanding the condition could unlock new ways to tackle age-related diseases.

US launches fresh strikes on Iran as Trump warns Tehran it ‘better behave’ | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it had launched a fresh wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday as President Donald Trump warned Tehran it “better behave”.

The US military said “Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels” moving through the Strait of Hormuz had been targeted. Air defences also sounded in the capital Tehran, according to state media.
Iran meanwhile said it had struck US military targets in the region, including in Bahrain and Kuwait, as a fifth day of renewed hostilities strained their preliminary deal to end the war.

Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, told state media Tehran had “no reason” to abide by the deal if it did not benefit from it.
Trump had threatened late on Tuesday to attack bridges and power plants should Iran not return to talks next week.

Asked by reporters late on Wednesday whether he would give a deadline before doing so, he responded: “I ‌don’t like giving deadlines, but they pretty much know, they know the story… they better behave.”

He later told delegates at a defence summit that Iran was “not happy right now”.
