The evolution of today’s BIRKENSTOCK classics.

1964 –The CLOSED MODEL: ZÜRICH
In the fall of 1964, at the Foot and Shoe Trade Fair in Hamburg, Karl Birkenstock launched his second model. This model covered wide parts of the feet and was given the very literal name CLOSED MODEL. This later became known as ZÜRICH. Karl stayed with the creative approach of his design. The clean lines of the CLOSED MODEL, inspired by Brutalism, made clearly visible the materials of which the sandal was made.

1973 – An open sandal: ARIZONA
The design of ARIZONA was based on the CLOSED MODEL. Karl ‘opened’ the shoe, creating the now iconic two-strap design. By following his design rules, he created a modern sandal with its characteristic clear lines. Today, ARIZONA is the quintessential BIRKENSTOCK sandal.

1976 – The CORK CLOG: BOSTON
Rather than being heavy or rigid – like many of the wooden styles at the time – BOSTON was lightweight and flexible and was designed with a modern, urban aesthetic.
1983 – The thong sandal: GIZEH

Karl spent three years perfecting a thong sandal design. While he introduced five new styles of thong sandals simultaneously, GIZEH stood out and became iconic. Defined by its distinctive T-shaped ‘toe bridge’, GIZEH was a clear-cut BIRKENSTOCK thong-style sandal that seamlessly incorporated the contoured footbed. It has since become a staple in today’s core collection.
