Wealth in 1780s France looked like a dream of endless luxury, glittering palaces, extravagant fashion, and lavish banquets. But behind the elegance of Versailles was a society on the brink of collapse. As the French Revolution approached, being rich—and especially being a member of the nobility—could become a deadly liability.

In this documentary, we explore what life was really like for France’s wealthy elite during the final years of the Ancien Régime. Discover the privileges enjoyed by aristocrats, the crushing tax burden placed on ordinary people, the lavish court culture at Versailles, and the growing resentment that fueled revolution. We’ll examine how nobles lived, dressed, dined, and entertained themselves, why many underestimated the coming crisis, and how fortunes, titles, and even entire families disappeared almost overnight during the Reign of Terror.
