The UK’s position on the Falkland Islands is “unwavering”, Downing Street has said after Argentina’s president said the islands were “historically and legally” Argentinian.

Javier Milei said the “winds of change” favoured his country’s claim to the islands and pledged sanctions on firms planning to exploit oil close to the islands.

More than 40 years after the war over the territory, sovereignty of the archipelago in the south-west Atlantic Ocean remains hotly disputed between Britain and Argentina.

President Trump hinted the US would not help the UK in any future Falklands conflict because Britain “had not been there to help me” during his war with Iran.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he expects the war with Russia to continue into the winter, following talks with Donald Trump’s top envoys in Kyiv.

The discussions finished without an announcement of a major breakthrough, after Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Ukraine for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion. The previous day, the pair had held talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Witkoff said he was “encouraged” by what he called “substantive” and important talks in Kyiv. Zelensky stressed that he wanted a just peace with no opportunity for renewed aggression by Russia.
