AI is getting more powerful “by the day” and a kill switch should be required by firms, one of the co-founders of AI company Anthropic has told the BBC.

Jack Clark says AI moves faster than other technology – “getting smarter and more capable every few months”, which could become a “major risk to society”.

During the interview with the BBC’s Faisal Islam, Clark responded directly to concerns from BBC viewers – including worries about the impact on future generations.

A government bill promised by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson that will change the UK’s Brexit deal with the EU will ‘break international law’ according to one cabinet minister. The Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis admitted the new legislation would go against the treaty ‘in a specific and limited way’. The former prime minister Theresa May has warned the changes could damage trust in the UK over future trade deals. The latest round of trade negotiations between Britain and the EU started today. Senior civil servant Sue Gray is carrying out an investigation into alleged Covid rule breaking in Downing Street and government departments.

The purpose of the investigation is to establish “a general understanding of the nature” of gatherings that took place and whether any “individual disciplinary action” should be taken, the inquiry’s terms of reference said.

Her report is likely to be a largely factual account of any gatherings, and she cannot rule on whether lockdown laws were broken.

The findings will be made public, but not necessarily the full report.

The European Union has issued an ultimatum to Boris Johnson’s government over its plans to override part of the Brexit withdrawal deal it signed up to, which would be in breach of international law.

The EU has called on the UK to abandon the plan or risk jeopardising talks on a future trade deal. Brussels said the threat by the UK had “seriously damaged trust” and it has raised the possibility of taking legal action.

However Michael Gove, speaking for the British government, said it would not withdraw the proposed legislation.
