New York police raid Columbia campus and arrest protesters | BBC News

Published

on

New York City police have entered the Columbia University en masse and are arresting students.

The NYPD told the BBC officers have entered Hamilton Hall, an academic building recently occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters.

The activists had taken over the Hamilton Hall building nearly 24 hours earlier amid two weeks of campus protests over the Israel-Gaza war.

The police were authorised to go in by university authorities, after student demonstrators defied a deadline to disperse.

Published

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said he is “shocked” at the reaction to a statement he made on Tuesday about the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The UN chief held a news conference to address comments which sparked anger from Israel yesterday, when he said Hamas attacks “did not happen in a vacuum”.

He said he clearly condemned the “acts of terror” inflicted on Israel and clarified his words were “not justifying acts of terror by Hamas”.

Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan has called for his resignation.

France manhunt: cameras record brutal ambush as “drug boss” freed and guards shot dead | BBC News

on

Hundreds of police officers in France are hunting for an armed gang who ambushed a prison van on a busy road near Rouen in Normandy , shooting dead two prison guards and freeing a prisoner known as ‘The Fly”.

The brutal attack, which took place at a road toll booth and was captured on CCTV, has shocked France. Gunmen opened fire on prison officers, killing two and critically injuring two others. France’s President Emmanuel Macron said “everything is being done to find the perpetrators.”

The prisoner, Mohamed Amra, was being taken from court to a prison when a car rammed the prison van at the toll gate. He’s accused of being a drugs gang leader and has been indicted by prosecutors in Marseille for a kidnapping that led to a death.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Nick Beake in Rouen.

King Charles hands over military role to William | BBC News

Published

on

King Charles has handed over a prestigious role with the Army Air Corps to his son Prince William.

It is unusual for the King and the Prince of Wales to both take part in an engagement – and this has been a symbolic handing over of the baton.

The King had become colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps 32 years ago – and now he has been succeeded by his eldest son, Prince William.

With his own cancer treatment still continuing, the King spoke to a veteran at the event in Hampshire who had undergone chemotherapy for testicular cancer – and they appeared to discuss losing the sense of taste.
