Putin claims landslide victory as thousands protest against “rigged election” | BBC News
Vladimir Putin has claimed victory in Russia’s presidential election as exit polls declared that he had won more than 87% of the vote.
Speaking at his campaign headquarters, Mr Putin thanked voters and “our warriors”, a reference to soldiers fighting in Ukraine. The result will secure Mr Putin another six years as Russian President.
Thousands of people took part in protests as the United States declared that the election was neither free nor fair. Dozens of protesters were arrested in Russia as they joined queues outside polling stations at noon on the last day of voting, in a show of defiance called for by the widow of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died suddenly last month in an Arctic penal colony.
If the 87% share of the vote for Mr Putin is confirmed it will be the biggest claimed victory for a candidate since the fall of the Soviet Union. It will also mean that Vladimir Putin overtakes Joseph Stalin to become the longest-serving Russian leader in more than 200 years.
The result is expected to strengthen Mr Putin’s grip on power. It comes two years after the invasion of Ukraine and at a time of sweeping political repression in Russia, with Mr Putin condemned as an international pariah by many nations.

Venezuela earthquakes: What we know so far | BBC News
At least 164 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured after two powerful earthquakes rocked Venezuela within seconds of each other on Wednesday, interim president Delcy Rodríguez has said.
The second quake was one of the strongest tremors to hit the South American country in a century, at a magnitude of 7.5.
Buildings collapsed and residents ran into the streets for safety as tremors from the twin quakes struck the capital Caracas, with rescuers racing to find survivors who may be trapped beneath rubble.

People smuggler convicted in France found by BBC living in UK and seeking asylum | BBC News
A convicted people smuggler, described as the “godfather” of the French migrant camps, is living and working in an English village where he’s believed to be seeking asylum, a BBC investigation can reveal.
Twana Jamal was given a five-year jail sentence in France in 2016, where authorities described him as one of the most successful people-smugglers ever caught.
Following a tip-off this year, the BBC traced Jamal to Blaby in Leicestershire, where we witnessed him working illegally, driving a car without a licence and apparently using a false name.
Jamal is one of more than 20 people smugglers the BBC has found to have reached the UK, raising serious concerns about whether existing border controls are effective in checking asylum seekers who have committed serious crimes overseas.
The Home Office told us: “All asylum claimants are subject to mandatory security checks to confirm their identity for the purpose of immigration, security and criminality checks”, and that the UK has “a number of agreements with countries which enable the sharing of criminal record information”, adding that immigration enforcement action is currently at its highest level in history.
