Skeleton reveals early humans had sex with Neanderthals – BBC News

Published

on

In 1998, the of a 29,000-year-old child was unearthed in Portugal’s Lapedo valley.

The child both early modern human and Neanderthal features, including the chin and lower arms of a modern human but the jaw and build of a Neanderthal.

Researchers believed that the child’s anatomy was the result of mixed Neandertal-early modern human ancestry.

Now new archaeological and DNA techniques may hold the answer.

BBC confronts man bulk-buying and reselling UK driving tests | BBC News

Published

on

Driving instructors are being offered kickbacks of up to £250 a month to sell their official test-booking login details to touts, a BBC investigation has found.

Touts use these login details to book driving tests in bulk and sell them to learners on WhatsApp and Facebook, charging as much as £500 for tests that should cost no more than £75.

This makes it harder for learners to book through legitimate routes and adds to already lengthy waiting times.

The BBC confronted Anil Ahmed, who buys driving instructors’ login details and then sells tests online at a mark-up. He says the claims we put to him are a “complete fabrication”.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander recently announced plans to change driving test rules, which it is hoped will stop touts and reduce the backlog. Only learners – not instructors – will be able to book test slots from spring 2026.

Explaining Ukraine to Kids: A Special Episode with Newsround | BBC News

Published

on

What do kids want to know about the war in Ukraine? On this special Q&A edition of Ukrainecast, we’re teaming up with Newsround (the BBC’s children’s news programme) to find out. To mark World Children’s Day, we took a panel of BBC experts to Hammersmith Academy, a secondary school in London, to respond to questions from a live audience.

Victoria Derbyshire and Vitaly Shevchenko are joined on this episode by Newsround presenter Ricky Boleto, and Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse. Why did the war start? Are there really any safe places in Ukraine? And who is working towards making peace? They answer all that, and we hear from some of those Ukrainian children who have been forced to start a new life in the UK.

If young listeners found any parts of this episode upsetting, you can find advice and support on the Newsround website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround
