Ukraine’s President Zelensky speaks at The Hague – BBC News

Published

on

Speaking at The Hague, Ukraine’s President Zelensky called for the establishment of a war tribunal to hold Russia to account for alleged war crimes.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin should be sentenced for his “criminal actions”, Volodymyr Zelensky has told the International Criminal Court.

Zelensky said more than the fate of one country is at stake in this war, adding that we “cannot stop wars of aggression, but can defeat aggression as a criminal idea that originates in the mindset of someone who is used to impunity.”

Get off the stage Zelenska, you're letting down the people of Ukraine!

As a matter of fact, you should be stopped and arrested for threatening to take us all down with you in this pointless conflictual military exercise of your doing now…

Never witnessed such careless, irresponsible political leadership in Europe as this before…

Is it Time to Tax the Robots? | BBC News

Published

on

Join the AI Decoded team as we examine Sam Altman’s vision for an era of artificial superintelligence. The Open AI CEO is calling for a new kind of social contract — an “AI New Deal” — arguing that unprecedented technological power will require rethinking how the benefits are shared, including ideas such as wealth redistribution and even taxes on robots.

Also in the programme, presenter Christian Fraser is joined by leading AI thinker Gary Marcus and Oxford University robotics expert Professor Sara Bernardini to explore what a future shaped by autonomous machines could mean for work, safety and society.

Plus, tech reporter Lara Lewington meets 19‑year‑old student Maeve O’Neil, whose smart ring detected a life‑threatening health issue before it was too late.

AI Decoded — helping you make sense of the AI shaping your world.

Has Trump’s feud with Pope Leo crossed a line with Catholics? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

There is continuing criticism from Catholics around the world, as US President Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo escalates. Trump said Pope Leo XIV was “weak”, and posted an AI-generated image of himself on Truth Social, which many people believe depicted him as Jesus.

The image, which has now been deleted, showed Trump appearing to heal a sick man in a hospital bed. He said it showed him as a doctor. The image post came hours after the president posted a lengthy message criticising the pontiff, who is a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operation in Iran.

Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has said Donald Trump’s remarks are ”unacceptable”. Meloni, who is Catholic and heads a right-wing coalition government, is a close ally of Trump.

Pope Leo said that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration. There are more than 70 million Catholics in the US – many of whom are swing voters. We ask the BBC’s religion editor, Aleem Maqbool, if Donald Trump’s row with the pope has dealt lasting damage to his Catholic support.

BBC investigation finds lawyers coaching fake LGBTQ+ asylum claims | BBC News

Published

on

A shadow industry of law firms and advisers is charging thousands of pounds to help migrants pretend to be gay in order to stay in the UK, the BBC has found.

In the first part of a major undercover investigation, we reveal how migrants whose visas are due to run out are being given fake cover stories and instructed in how to obtain fabricated evidence, including supporting letters, photographs and medical reports.

They then apply for asylum claiming to be gay and in fear for their lives if they return to Pakistan or Bangladesh.

In response to our findings, the Home Office said: “Anyone found trying to exploit the system will face the full force of the law, including removal from the UK.”

US Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad alongside President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and special adviser Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for peace talks with Iran.

Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has recently emerged as a prominent government figure, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the middle of the night ahead of the talks.

Both the sides were greeted by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Pakistan’s military chief Asim Munir. The country is a key mediator between the two warring nations, and played a part in securing a fragile two-week ceasefire.
