Hints of progress in peace talks as Ukraine accepts it cannot join NATO – BBC News
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has accepted that his country can never join NATO, in a signicant change of position that may help open the way towards an end to the war in his country.
In the build-up to the Russian invasion, a key demand of President Putin was that Ukraine must remain outside the western military alliance.
Until now that demand has been rejected outright by Washington, NATO and the government in Kyiv, who all insisted that Ukraine had an absolute right to “self-determination”.
Now President Zelensky has said in a video message: “Ukraine is not a member of Nato. We understand that. We have heard for years that the doors were open, but we also heard that we could not join. It’s a truth and it must be recognised.”
It’s the latest sign of possible movement towards a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Both Russian and Ukrainian negotiators have spoken of “progress” in negotiations although there are few specific details.
Russia has said it wants Ukraine to declare neutrality, disarm, recognise Crimea as part of Russia and recognise the Donbas region as independent. Ukraine has been calling for a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of all Russian forces.

Nato needs a “quantum leap” in defence to deter threats to the alliance, its secretary general has said, as he called for Western allies to invest more in their armed forces.
In a speech in London, Mark Rutte said Russia could be ready to use military force against Nato within five years.
Rutte said Nato needed a “400% increase in air and missile” to credibly defend itself against attacks.
He said he expected Nato allies to agree to spend 5% of their national income on defence, at a summit in the Netherlands next week.
Rutte’s speech at Chatham House comes at a critical time for global security as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and China’s military expansion continues to raise questions about Nato’s capabilities and readiness for war.

US President Donald Trump is deploying more National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles as protests in the city continue.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has said he will take legal action against the deployments, calling President Trump “deranged” and “dictatorial”.
Demonstrations in the city continued into a fourth day on Monday, with new rallies starting up across the US against immigration authorities.

The governor of California has said that President Trump is “hoping for chaos” by deploying National Guard forces in Los Angeles. Gavin Newsom condemned the move as “purposefully inflammatory”. It comes after three days of protests against immigration raids in the city.
The Los Angeles Police Department have said the protests are largely peaceful and the LA authorities said they could handle the situation.
National Guard troops have been stationed outside the Metropolitan detention centre, one of several sites that have seen confrontations involving hundreds of demonstrators and federal law enforcement officials.
It’s the first time a US president has deployed the National Guard in the face of civil unrest since the LA riots in 1992. President Trump said: “We’ll send whatever we need to make sure there’s law and order.”
However Mr Trump’s Democrat opponents have said the administration’s use of masked immigration officers with military gear to arrest civilians in restaurants and shops has been inflammatory and the president’s eagerness to deploy trained soldiers was unwarranted.

All US Presidents are war criminals. In the case of Ukraine everybody calls Putin a war criminal and that is true! However this corrupt Zelensky is is not far behind. He has intentionally violated the Minsk agreement, demands that his people get slaughtered, has no intention to talk peace, only continuous to fill his own pockets and is obviously controlled by Ukraine’s far right militia. That does of course not give Putin any right to attack Ukraine and kill thousands of innocent people. The war could have been prevented easily but it is clearly in the interest of the US weapons industry. So let us stop lying and not talk about western values. All US vassals have to jump when the empire tells them to do so.

In the eyes of the world Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan were all non white third world countries, uneducated non European, terrorists who eat curry instead of pie and chips.

A lot of my friends died in Afghanistan, mostly doctors and lawyers having a meeting. I miss them.
Where was the world then. Now some of my colleagues are treating white, Asian and black patients in hospitals.

I'm going to be honest I don't know who will agree or not but I have got to say that NATO and the U.S have to grow the biggest pair of steel balls to actually get it through that there is no stalling for time now it's either we handle this by force or let Ukraine be destroyed and allow Putin to become the one dictator to actually conquer the rest of Europe this is for the greater good of the whole world if all unified we could support Ukraine's fight to the fullest but right now no one has the guts to say we should help then the only way we should have from the beginning I hope they figure out the way to do this is without peaceful actions as of now all I see is complete denial of this war and denial of the future if it is not stopped right now.

Well, it's not like NATO even wants to let them join in the first place. Having them join would oblige to get involved and confront Putin, something they've repeatedly stated they're not interested in doing. So it's not really a matter of choice, more like a matter of fact. If they had been allowed to join years ago, perhaps this would not have emboldened Putin. Right now Ukraine is being used as a meat shield to protect NATO countries, especially the rich ones. Kinda ironic, but I understand why they're fearful of getting physically involved.
