US election: What happens now and why the world is watching closely | BBC News

Published

on

Former President Donald Trump cemented his status as the clear frontrunner after a resounding win in Iowa, with Ron DeSantis a distant second place and Nikki Haley in third.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination will face a Democrat, almost certainly President Joe Biden, in the November presidential election.

It’s an election being watched not just in the US but around the world, says BBC US correspondent Katty Kay.

The US is currently involved in two hot wars, Ukraine and Gaza. Meanwhile, US-China relations have deteriorated and tensions in the Asia Pacific region have risen.

It feels like with such huge margins, Donald Trump is playing with house money. The results of the general election and its margin will be very telling.

The true face of the BBC @ 7.48 talking about Ukraine. Unbelievable! Ukraine are depending upon the US to keep the war going!
They don't want Trump because the WAR will end and he will negotiate a settlement.

BBC coverage is so weird. They make it sound like Trump crushed Iowa. He got 7% of the Iowa Republican votes (a fraction of general election votes) in a caucus process which isn’t relevant to the General election when over a million will. New Hampshire hasn’t occurred and Haley is doing pretty good there. I’m not a Republican but as an honest human being, it still seems plausible that Haley could win. As a Democrat, I hope she wins because I don’t think she’d be anti democrat (pro authoritarian pro Putin) as Trump. In addition, to inform the BBC The United States of America has 50 states that will decide who the Republican nominee will be for President. It’s not unthinkable to believe Republicans in large states like Illinois, California, New York and other more GOP progressive leaning won’t vote for Haley. As a Democrat, I believe Trump will be the easiest to beat for Biden. As someone who is frightened of Trump being elected and ending Democracy and turning our nation into a Putin Puppet, I’d prefer Haley to be President.

If Trump can bring inflation under control and stop the reckless spending of the government while securing the US borders he's certainly the President needed. However the rhetoric of spewing that the election was rigged and fueling political division rather than unity is further damaging his reputation. Of course the Left is doing the same; but a level headed president needs to direct his attention to what the country needs to make it stronger and not finger pointing.

Don't get overexcited here about snowballs and whatever. Trump formed a cult of personality after the last election, with a dedicated violent following that attacks (sometimes physically, sometimes threats) anyone within his party that says anything bad about him. The non-extremists in the party have just (mostly) quietly stepped out and become independents or temporary-democrats (the opposition party), so they don't get heard from within these things. So all the primary races in the GOP are essentially foregone conclusions – the people running aren't running against him, they're his followers running for VP and other cabinet jobs. You can think of the new GOP the same way as you do about Putin and his elections. Difference is that he lost (by over a million people) the last Actual election (primaries aren't elections) and since then more and more terrible things have come out against him – so how he does in his own party's primary has nothing to do with how he will do in the actual election

Every single lawsuit against Trump is a political scheme meant to distract the elections. They're sponsored by the enemies of the people and their useful idiots. All claims of Trump breaking laws are completely partisan. Nobody being attacked believes the charges, and we all know why they're being launched. If you are honest, you know too. Suffice to say, Trump will win the primaries handily, and probably the election. Go ahead and try to make news out of a done deal, but realize that the primaries are the last gasp of desperate never-trumpers. I told you so.

The terms of a deal between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are being finalised, a Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations has told the BBC.

It comes as US President Joe Biden said a deal was “on the brink” of coming to fruition, and that his administration was working urgently on the matter.

An Israeli official also told news agency Reuters that negotiations were in “advanced stages”, with a deal possible in “hours, days or more”.

Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, and with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar, who is mediating the negotiations.

The survivors of an Egyptian dive boat sinking have told the BBC about the moment the ship went down.

Thirty-five people were rescued from the wreck of the Sea Story, an Egyptian dive vessel that sank in the Red Sea on 25 November last year. Four bodies were recovered and seven people are still missing.

Using animations to illustrate their testimony, this is the minute-by-minute account of the sinking.
