Israel-Gaza war: IDF says 24 soldiers killed in Gaza in one day | BBC News
The Israeli army says 24 of its soldiers were killed in Gaza on Monday – the deadliest day for its forces since their ground operation began.
That includes 21 reservists who died in an explosion likely caused by mines that Israeli forces had placed in two buildings to demolish them, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, with an investigation under way into what happened.
It is thought a missile fired by Palestinian armed fighters hit a tank guarding the troops just beforehand.

Lawyers say nearly 2000 people across Devon and Cornwall have signed up to demand compensation from the local water company over sewage spills.
The group legal claim wants South West Water held responsible for occasions when raw sewage discharges prevented people using the sea and deterred tourists from using local businesses.
South West Water last year spilled sewage for more hours than any other English water company – more than 400,000 in total. It is also due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to repeated illegal sewage spills.
South West Water said it is aware of the legal claim and is currently investing £760m to reduce the amount of sewage it discharges.

On Sunday, two prominent left-wing political commentators in the US — Hasan Piker and his uncle, Cenk Uygur – said they had been barred from visiting the UK.
Both men were due to appear at the SXSW London festival, but say the British government blocked them from entering the country because of their criticism of Israel.
The British government confirmed that it had denied them entry on the grounds that their presence in the UK “may not be conducive to the public good” but did not elaborate further.
Their cases have sparked renewed debate about the limits of free speech in the UK.
We speak to American political activist Shabbos Kestenbaum – who was due to debate Cenk Uygur in London – and to the legal academic and host of the BBC’s The Law Show, Joelle Grogan.

A Russian missile and drone attack has killed at least 13 people across Ukraine, nine in Dnipro and four in the capital Kyiv, marking one of Moscow’s largest assaults in recent months.
Dozens were also injured, including several children, after the overnight air strikes hit apartment blocks, with emergency crews racing to find people feared trapped beneath rubble in Kyiv.
Air raid warnings were in place across most of Ukraine in the early hours of Tuesday.
Russia’s defence ministry said the strikes had been a response to previous Ukrainian attacks, saying in a statement that the “strike objectives” had all been achieved.

Why Henry Nowak’s murder sparked a debate on race and policing in the UK | Global News Podcast
The murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, and his treatment by police in the moments before his death, have sparked a backlash in Britain.
Newly released video shows that Mr Nowak, who was white, was handcuffed and arrested as he lay dying – despite telling officers he had been stabbed and couldn’t breathe. His killer, Sikh man Vickrum Digwa, had falsely accused him of a racist attack.
The BBC’s political correspondent Rob Watson tells us that the case has provoked a debate about race and policing in the UK.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing populist Reform Party, has claimed Mr Nowak’s death was evidence of “anti-white prejudice” and “two-tier policing”, suggesting that the British public react with “pure, cold rage”. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged calm, and accused Mr Farage of exploiting the murder to create “grievance and division”. He has also said the police face “serious questions”.
On Tuesday, at least 11 police officers were injured in clashes with protestors near the site of the murder.
Hampshire Police Chief Constable Alexis Boon has said the force is “sorry for handcuffing and arresting Henry”, and that an investigation by the police watchdog will aim to understand the officers’ actions.

Antisemitism lives in the foundations of human society and human nature. The human ego—the desire to enjoy at the expense of others and nature—evolves throughout history and during a person’s life. The more it grows, the more it feels an opposite force also dwelling within. That opposite force is called a “point in the heart.” Contrary to our egoistic desires that wish solely to absorb pleasures into themselves, the point in the heart is a desire that has potential to develop into a desire that loves, gives and positively connects to others.
The point in the heart is also known as the seed of the soul, as we can develop it to discover our soul—the connection that underlies those very points. The realization of the potential encased in this small point of desire is the ability to rise above the human ego, where instead of detaching from one another through our growing egoism, i.e. increasingly prioritizing self-benefit over benefiting others, we instead prioritize the benefit of others and positive human connection.
The point in the heart is the opposite of our egoistic nature. There are people who host only the negative egoistic force, and there are people who have both the negative egoistic force and the positive altruistic force. When both positive and negative forces coexist in us, then we become called “Jews” or “Israel” according to our inner essence. Likewise, if we solely host the negative egoistic force with no revelation yet of the point in the heart, then we are called “nations of the world” according to that essence.
We underwent several stages of development throughout history. The point in the heart first surfaced throughout human society in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians who felt the inner urge to seek something deeper in life beyond the earthly egoistic desires joined Abraham, who taught a method for how to nurture the point in the heart in order to rise above the ego and positively connect. Abraham organized the Babylonians who wanted to study with him into a group, and he called this group “Israel,” which is made up of the words “Yashar Kel” (“straight to God”), i.e. people who aim themselves directly at the attainment of nature’s upper force of love, bestowal and connection, which is opposed to the force existing in human beings, the force of reception.
Since Abraham’s time, the two groups—Israel and the nations of the world—have undergone much development. Some from the Israel camp left the group to pursue their natural egoistic inclinations, i.e. with an inclination to the nations of the world, while some from the nations of the world felt that they possess a special closeness and connection, which draws them to Israel. In other words, Jews are not a nationality, but they are people who host the point in the heart, which associates them with the positive force of nature, and which is opposite to the egoistic force that we are born and raised with by nature.
The source of antisemitism is in the contrast and conflict between the two opposite desires of our inborn egoism and the point in the heart that can develop our ability to rise above the human ego.
