UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has shelved his Chagos Islands deal amid worsening relations with US President Donald Trump, after the US failed to formally confirm its approval.
Trump had urged Starmer to scrap the deal despite earlier expressing support for the treaty. In January the president called the plan an “act of total weakness”.
UK government officials have said they are not entirely abandoning the agreement – which would hand sovereignty of the British territory to Mauritius – but have run out of time to pass legislation before Parliament is prorogued in the coming weeks.
However, a new Chagos bill is not expected to feature in the King’s Speech in mid-May.

Donald Trump has removed a controversial Truth Social post depicting himself as a Jesus-like figure, after a growing backlash.
The AI-generated image, which showed Trump appearing to heal a sick man in a hospital bed, sparked fierce criticism from across the US political spectrum, including from some of Trump’s most ardent supporters.
It was published hours after Trump posted a lengthy message attacking Pope Leo XIV, a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operation in Iran, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”.
Pope Leo – the first American Pope – has condemned the war in Iran, saying it has led to “absurd and inhuman violence”. The Pope said he had “no fear” of the Trump administration or “speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do”.
Trump acknowledged posting the picture, telling reporters he thought it was “me as a doctor”. The now-deleted image showed Trump, wearing a white robe, with a glowing hand on the forehead of a sick man, which critics said was similar to religious paintings showing Jesus healing the infirm.
The background of the images included the Statue of Liberty, a large US flag fluttering, fighter jets and an eagle, as well as a nurse, a woman praying and what appeared to be a soldier in uniform.
Meanwhile US warships have begun enforcing a blockade of Iran and the strait of Hormuz. Oil prices have edged up after the failure of peace talks between the US and Iran. And in Lebanon, Israel is continuing its assault in the south of the country.

4,000 Recovered COVID-19 Church Members in South Korea Declare Donation
of $83 Billion Worth Plasma for Cure
A South Korea-based religious group named the Shincheonji Church of Jesus said that
over 4,000 members of the church recovered from COVID-19 are willing to donate
plasma for developing a new treatment.
The amount of blood will be about $83 billion worth if the 4,000 patients donate 500ml
individually, according to the current transaction in the United States. “It is difficult to
accelerate developing a medicine for COVID-19 with only 200 recovered patients who
expressed their will to donate blood. The massive donation from the recovered patients
in the Shincheonji Church will solve the problem of the lack of blood for research,” said
an official from Green Cross Pharma, a biopharmaceutical company in South Korea.
For the first quarter of this year, the rapid virus spread hit the church members in Daegu
of South Korea, where the early signs of the crisis appeared with the controversy over
the massive visitors from China before the infection of church members.
Mr. Man Hee Lee, founder of the Shincheonji Church, said that members of the church
are advised to donate plasma voluntarily. “As Jesus sacrificed himself with his blood for
life, we hope that the blood of people can bring positive effects on overcoming the
current situation,” said Mr. Lee.
“We had a discussion with the health authorities and tried to establish a plan with details
for donation. Some of the recovered members have already donated individually, feeling
thankful for the assistance from the government and medical teams. They expressed
their will to make contribution to the society,” said an official in the church.
Some local governments in South Korea recently brought lawsuits against the church
with allegations that the church did not cooperate with the authorities by not submitting
the full list of church facilities and members.
“No evidence has been found that Shincheonji supplied missing or altered lists. And there
were only minor differences,” said Kim Kang-lip, vice-minister of Health. Academic
researches on Shincheonji and COVID-19 stated that the church “provided the list of its
South Korean members six days after it was requested” and “it was initially unclear
whether shut down facilities and properties should be included” when the government
asked for the lists of real estate.

While the figures for Brazil are bad the figures for the UK are far far worse, Brazil is a developing country of 209 million, the UK is a wealthy developed country with only 60 million yet has close to 60,000 deaths from covid 19 and hides its own data and true figures. The UK is one of the worst performing countries in the world when it comes to how governments handled the pandemic. The UK has a population 13 times that of Ireland yet its death rate from covid 19 is 45 times that of Ireland.
