The UK’s triple lock pension promise, introduced in 2012, ensures annual increases in state pensions. This video explores if this policy is too generous, if it favours retirees at the expense of younger workers, and whether it’s sustainable.

The pensions triple lock is designed for all ages at all points in time. To get rid of it would be a disgrace.

Those who don’t pay tax shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Pensioners are destroying the lives of younger generations only for them to live in luxury for the last decade of their life.

  5. @alanrobertson9790

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Everything said in the video about % increases is accurate but I think a small detail has been omitted. The full state pension is £10,600 per year, the average salary is £29,600 per year and the National Minimum wage is around £20 – £22k (depending on hours). How many people would really want to live on £10,600 per year! Its only tolerable because many pensioners have other incomes. When you review pensions you need to consider the absolute amount as well as the % increases. This is an error I see in most videos considering this topic. Almost like people had an agenda!

    Absolute bollocks
Let’s be honest those on pension now deserve every penny with how hard and crap working conditions was back in the day
But I think that there needs to be a criteria for those who can claim it like those who have been on low/mid income jobs, high income for about 5 years max, those in the emergency services and council workers excluding the high earners, carers and those who are disabled and those who moved from another county here legally who have put in 30 years min in working that isn’t a mid/high income
Those who are on benefits that aren’t disabled, caring for anyone disabled or elderly or not done at least 30 years worth of work (give and take with change of circumstances ) should be on a reduced rate for pension
Those who are on the low/low medium end working putting into the pot deserve the it for their later lives than those who are on salaries that what they make in 1 year is compared to a minimum wage worker for 10 years

  7. @jack-h

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

How about modifying the scheme to an ‘average lock’? So the state pension would rise by the average of the three metrics per annum. Thus, pensions are still uplifted each year, but this scheme would also go towards addressing the cost/inequality arguments somewhat. Just a thought perhaps.

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

It is a ridiculous and unaffordable policy. Why should the rest of the country suffer so people who have already benefitted from our economy can benefit even more

  9. @amb163

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Whatever the "solution," it looks like one generation (or more, or all) will be set up for poverty. No wonder there's so much generational bickering. As we keep fighting between each other, the rich (of all ages) just sit back and get richer.

There should be an option to opt out of the state pension at the normal minimum pension age in exchange for a higher tax free cash percentage on private pensions.

  13. @lorenzopini1990

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Just link state pension to be equal of 80% of minimum wage. Get the elderly to want higher minimum wages for workers 😊

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Are you a millennial or gen Z? START VOTING FOR POLITICIANS THAT WILL BENEFIT YOU.

This is exactly what older people do: they don’t give a f about anyone else.

    If you are not voting:
    – they will happily vote to raise the property prices (they own properties).
    – they will happily vote to tax workers heavier and increase pensions.
    – they will happily keep salaries low (because they own companies)

Start voting in interest of your own generation.
Start voting for parties that will put necessary regulations in place.
Start voting for politicians that will tax corporations, not employees!

Otherwise you can keep watching how they take your future away.

  15. @carlmartinez7532

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Its not so much the pensions are too high as they are lower than in europe its more we dont tax alot of the wealth Richer pensioners have be it property or investment income, if you had to rely on the state pension and rent somewhere you are probably poorer than a young worker.

  16. @iceonthemoon

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

There should be a mechanism that links the rising in the state pension to the amount collected in national insurance. The triple lock is inflexible and disregards those paying ever more tax to fund it.

  17. @smada36

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Well, a pension should take into account that a retired person normally owns their accommodation and has no mortgage or rent. The largest bill a working person typically has. So a pension just really needs to cover food and utilities in its most basic form.

Gen Z is less likely to own their accommodation so more likely to still have this liability. They are likely to require a higher pension to live.

8+% is going to be chicken feed to where it will need to be.

We all have a duty of care to look after those that have done their bit, but not at the expensive of kicking away the ladder that put them there.

Again, it should be a little less about people's rights, and a bit more about people's responsibilities.

  18. @clarkeysam

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

It's obvious that the triple lock is unaffordable and therefore will need to be scrapped at some point, the problem is that no party wants to be the one responsible for it's removal.

  21. @Kris_96

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

As a 27 year old, I'm more than happy for this to be kept, but I know full well that this will not be there in 40 years when it's my time to retire. Either way, I don't want it to go away. My problem is the fact that young and working people cannot afford to live in the UK anymore, some cannot even afford it to survive. We need similar policies for salaries as well. We cannot have minimum wage or living wage barely going up, companies abusing their staff and not paying their staff an appropriate wage. Imagine earning more money as a retiree than you did as a 20-30 year old because you get state pension and private pension.

  22. @aaronevans3656

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

can you put a title on the video which describes what the video is about?

  23. @joshuaalexander8866

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

It easy keep the triple lock but just index it instead, ie. run the three indexes and the state pension increases (relatively to the base year) by the highest of the three. That way its still a triple lock but as of today it would be a 42% increase (prices) as thats the highest out of wages (40%) and 2.5% yearly (38%) rather than the bonkers 60%. Its not a triple lock issue its just a bad maths issue.

  24. @20storiesunder

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

As much as I'd love a pension a non means tested triple locked pension in a country that is more and more populated by older people is asking for an economic disaster.

  25. @Goatcha_M

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

I hate to agree with Thatcher about anything, but she had a point here.
There is no logical reason for Pensions to match current wage growth, let alone grow by 2.5% regardless of the Economy.
They need to match Inflation, but that's all. The Triple Lock is a purely political policy intended to secure votes from the elderly. And that's why Labor can't afford to oppose it.

  26. @MC_heart4

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

All the social programs that people love were actually a ponzi scheme that is going to run out. And this is regardless of how many immigrants we ship in – as they eventually will get the benefits for "humane reasons" when they are all 75; did you actually think they were ever going back? the idea that people took out debt and a deficit to pay their benefits then died before they paid it off is sickening. For some reason, so many young people want to kick this can down the road on to the future. Sick

  27. @tomg268

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

We should defend the triple lock. Elderly people deserve to be able to afford a comfortable life, as do working people.

  28. @philipbriggs2473

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Reform, knowing they can't win the General Election would obviously prefer the Tories to Labour.
What Habib and Reform want to avoid here I think is Labour winning this and other By elections before the General Election, BUT, the combined Tory/Reform numbers (as happened in a by election last year) being greater than the Labour winning number of votes.
This will clearly demonstrate a split in the Right Wing vote, and Tice would look extremely stupid standing down Reform candidates at the General Election after recent comments he has publically made!

  29. @IAMMARTICUS1470

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

In theory, the triple lock should benefit young people the most. If pension growth outstrips inflation continuously for decades, then by the time young people retire the state pension will be enormous. Of course it’s completely financially unstable, so will collapse long before young people get there.

  30. @ffotograffydd

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

Every generation supports the pensions of previous generations. I’ve paid into the system my entire working life, I won’t feel guilty about claiming my meagre state pension in ten years time, especially as it’s one of the lowest in Europe!

These divisive tactics don’t actually help anyone. Most of the issues you mention are related to 14 years of Tory government, not state pensions. Other European countries manage well enough.

  31. @NoteSelf

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

The point often overlooked is that the state pension even with the triple lock increase is pitiful.

The current State Pension is £10,700 p/a – by comparison the Living Wage (purported to be how much someone needs to get by) is over double this.

An increase of 8.5% on £10,700 is the same amount in a persons pocket as 5.2% of £22,000 (accounting for income tax).

The triple lock thus appears as a generous increase, but it's from a tragically low baseline.

  32. @arron1906

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

It should also be noted that when Thatcher curbed State pension rises, she expounded personal pensions with tax incentives, which would be cheaper for the taxpayer in the long term and linked people into the economy rather than the view of "free money". Until then, most people were reliant on the State at retirement, which was unsustainable with people living longer. However, if most people took responsibility for their own pension, this meant the pool of people that need help from the State would reduce to manageable figures (eg the very low paid). At 1997, this rose to 63% of the population with their own pension provision. And then we had Brown, who removed the tax incentives as a short term win and this dropped to 37% within 5 years.

do you remember when we used to bring up these arugements and were called "racists" and "nazis"

  35. @user-ey1hh1jl9s

    January 12, 2024 at 2:04 pm

"We have to scrap it, because it's unfair that later generations won't get it after we inevitably scrap it".

Yup, sounds like typical Tory reasoning, that. There won't be any money once we've embezzled all the money, so we should embezzle more money before the rush starts.
