It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.

I usually agree with a lot of the analysis from the TLDR team, however on this video I feel like the mark has been missed on a few fronts. I will say beforehand however that you guys do a fantastic job and I really overall love and support your work.
1. In this video you have been way too soft on the maniac that killed Jo Cox. He wasn't just a gardener with mental health issues he was a far-Right extremist. He was deemed sane enough to stand trial and had life-long affiliations with far-Right extremist groups. This was not the actions of a mentally ill 'lone gunman' it was an act of stochastic terrorism perpetrated by a guy who shouted 'Heil Hitler' at his sentencing.
2. The political discourse is getting polluted but equating what the hardline brexiteers do to what remainers and those on the left do is a false equivalency. Public figures who call people traitors and use terms like 'betrayal' and 'enemies of the people' are galvanising their base because they know that some percentage of their supporters are lunatics who will commit the same acts of violence as Mair did against Jo Cox. Almost all political extremism in the UK is committed by white Right Wingers. People accusing Boris Johnson of being a dictator and of orchestrating a coup include people in his own party and senior aides. When someone expels 22 members of his own party in the form of a purity test, when the PM shuts down the legislative branch of the government for his own political motives, denigrates the judiciary and brazenly threatens to break the laws that are inconvenient to him personally what else do you call that? Those are the actions of someone who does not care about democracy.
3. The last comment I have regards the party political angle. The Liberal Democrats are just as likely to take voters away from the Tories as they are to take votes away from Labour. The Lib Dems policies and recent history indicate that they are Centre Right, not Centre Left. Their only appealing promise to labour voters is their EU stance but little else would compel them to switch. Whereas pro-Remain Tories would find a very hospitable welcome within the ranks of the lib dems. Your analysis on this point made it seem as if it were a binary which is far from the case.
It bares repeating that I believe TLDR does great work. Your videos do a good job of tackling important issues in an impartial manner. I would however caution against being neutral rather than being objective. There is a right and a wrong answer and pretending as though it's 'he said/she said' does a disservice to the truth.

Meh.
Your continued refusal to look at the deeper, sick motives behind Brexit is getting kinda old dude. Your gonna do several minutes of a video about how the language of political debates is getting out of hand, but I have never heard you mention the EU tax law changes that the rich assholes driving this all care about… We have totally forgotten the bigoted lies of the Leave campaign, we pretend the backstop is something invented by remainers…
This isn't a left v right, globalism v nationalism debate guys… That is the icing on top of this bigotry and greed cake, and trying to frame it as an argument between two sides with points is sick.

The MP's are trying to undermine a democratic vote and blaming the PM for the death threats being hurled at them.
Right..
@warrenmcdonald8170
January 8, 2024 at 2:19 am
The people voted for Brexit. The Parliament then acts in a traitorous manner and betrays the people by blocking Brexit. Then Parliament gets upset that the people notice the traitors betrayed them and start accurately calling them traitors. Yup, sounds like every politician in history. They only claim to represent the people as long as the people agree with them.
Pro tip: if you don't want to be called a traitor, then don't betray the people by ignoring their votes.
@pindrop.
January 8, 2024 at 2:19 am
What a horribly biased channel and misleading channel.
Parliament have refused a General Election twice, the government wants the public to have a say in the direction the country takes and the opposition have twice refused to be judged by their constituents.
"Angry language", ridiculous. The "Benn" Bill is a surrender and a betrayal. Of course if your wish is to overturn a democratic referendum result you will not have the sense to see that. I would go further and say traitor is perfectly apt for those that are going behind the government's back to strategize with a foreign power and sabotage this countries position in a negotiation.
This channel is disgusting propaganda.

It doesn't seem mentioned much – if the UK does manage to leave on 31st October what exactly can the policies of the Remain parties be in a subsequent General Election? Is it possible that Liberal and Labour candidates will be knocking on doors and saying, 'vote for me and we will rejoin the EU'. Explaining that it would mean joining the Euro, integrating our armed services into the EU Army, paying higher contributions and having all taxes going direct to Brussels, I would contend is more of a vote loser than a winner.
@Tracertme
January 8, 2024 at 2:19 am
Excellent heading "So what are parliamentarians doing about BREXIT" given they made such a fuss about prorogation of parliament, it seems they have come back had a few shouting matches, delivered absolutely nothing of any value, AGAIN… so what was the point…it was so obvious this would happen given the commons ability to do anything in the last 3.5 years.. Is this what the judges thought would serve the nations people well, or were they just missing their daily soap opera show. Now we need to clear out the supreme judges as well after this election, given their absolute inept abilities, why pay them to do nothing like the house of lords.. The judiciary would have been wise to stay out of politics, now they have put themselves in the firing line…..

Kind of a false equivalency between Remainers calling Johnson's action a "coup" and Leaver's death threats. Johnson's actions can be seen as an action specifically designed to curtail parliament, whereas death threats are just simply unfounded as a response to general opposition to a government. You can't both sides everything, TLDR

I'm sorry, I normally love TLDR stuff, but just regurgitating the public perception of something isn't impartial – in fact it's the opposite – & saying the Tories are 'in the middle of the Brexit debate' isn't true & reinforcing that Labour are being 'wishy washy' in their Brexit stance isn't true either; the Tories are rather extreme w/ their 31st October deadline 'come what may' & Labour support a deal w/ the EU on Labour 5 point plan, that will be put to a Public Vote w/ the leadership remaining neutral, that incredibly clear & not 'wishy washy' at all 🙃
@periurban
January 8, 2024 at 2:19 am
I watched about an hour and a half of Johnson's return to parliament, and I thought his performance was one of the most amazing things I've seen since the days of Thatcher, and I am a supporter of neither!
The sheer brass neck and political butchery Johnson displays is nothing short of mesmerising. If I was on his side I would be delighted by his approach and I'd be abandoning any thought of voting for the Brexit party, at this stage at least.
The main threat to Johnson's plans is that he is forced by the courts and parliament into getting a deal, which will drive votes back towards the Brexit party. The best thing for Johnson is for no deal to happen by default, so he can claim the victory of leaving as he always said he would, although it's difficult to see how that would be allowed to happen at this stage.
I'm not sure whether the EU are at the point of no return yet. Do they simply want us gone regardless?
@Yezu666

It'd be interesting if suddenly the UK parliamentary duopolly was broken and LibDems got a big share of the seats. As a bonus it would make UK more similar to the rest of the continent in that regard.

As an American I have a hard time following Brexit, but I am very interested, and this series helps me keep track. I don't think that leaving the EU was a very good idea, but part of why I feel that way is that the EU has kept Europe as a stronger economy than its individual constituents, and if we're going to pretend capitalism is a good idea the world needs more strong economies to push competition. If Brexit does happen I hope Scotland leaves the UK, and Northern Ireland rejoins Ireland, because they both wanted to stay. I wish England and Wales the best, but when people unload a shotgun into their foot they're going to have trouble walking for a while

Leavers calling remainers “traitors” and remainers calling leavers “facists” is a bit of a false equivalence since leavers have supporters who are unironically facists, are supported by facist groups, and are increasingly employing facists tactics to make no deal brexit happen
Where as calling leavers “traitors” is literally just a case of “you disagree with me, therefore you’re a traitor”
