China’s military budget is set to rise by about 10% in 2015.
The move comes after several years of double-digit defence spending increases. It is the world’s second-highest military spender, but remains far behind the US. Here’s a quick look at the world’s biggest military spenders.

I think China is still spending too little. Given how big the US military expenditure is China's amount is still insufficient, especially given that there are still so many border issues unresolved around China, including taiwan. If the BBC doesn't understand why China needs more military expenditure, then I suggest its editors refresh their understanding of the history of European and Japanese imperialism in China starting from the Opium Wars…..what a stupid question for the BBC to even question China's military expense. No wonder it's now banned in China.

Can you count by Military Spending Per Capita?
China spent only slightly more than twice of UK. Considering the size and population of China compared with UK, I actually expect more than that.

China should not increase military spending by double-digit, China should double its military spending. Americans already fucked up Europe/Russia and Middle East, the target next is China.

China spends a little over 1% of GDP on military, this is compared to the OECD average of 2.5% and America's 4%+.  If you look further on spending as % of government budget, China spends far less than the western world.  Heck, even India with 20% of China's GDP spends nearly 3% of its GDP on military.

If we don't spend money on a pro-active space program, we all die one day.  (Whether we had the biggest and best military on this Earth or not).  With inflation, space travel (and war), are getting more and more expensive.  With increasing fossil fuel costs, our fossil fuel dependent military is getting more and more expensive to operate and maintain.  When are we going to start bringing pure hydrogen to homes and businesses so at a minimum, to prolong the fossil fuels for our military and civilian vehicles?  Why aren't we building the next generation space station that incorporates artificial gravity that might help save any of us one day from this planet?

Not everything is perfect in the America's Government; still I trust it more than any of the other top nations. I think its safe to say America’s military is a world military, funding it keep order between other countries. Many countries can get away with corruption because of the people are passive and conspicuous. But in America’s case, being in the world’s eye means accountability, keeping American government from making (really) rash, corrupt decisions.

Think of a world where china has unmatched power. Scary.

Remember American life is good, you go to sleep feeling safe and problems are petty. Be proud to be American.

The military is just the Chinese government's way of putting the world into an arms race, and as you know, arm races are expensive. So whilst nations are going about a dick showing contest, China is building high speed railway networks right across Europe straight to Madrid. And once these countries realise that they have been duped by china in making themselves actually more economically vulnerable. China will just buy land, cooperations , patents, weapon system designs, and occupy the work economic market, including the banking sector. AKA the economic crises in Europe will just get worse. Oh and there is also a reason why IS won't kidnap Chinese nationals. I wonder why?

China has 14 borders, that's more than any other country in the world. There is a civil war in Myanmar spilling into China, more threats of a nuclear war from North Korea, Hindi nationalism in India and unrest in other border areas too. The military increase is in line with what's happening on the ground.

We clearly define our goals when we spend nearly 600bn on war (who are defended ourselves from?) and less than 100bn on education. We deserve whatever is coming.

The red Chinese should worry more about feeding their own miserable people before spending one cent on military. Maybe they have plans for expanding land wise?

It is estimated United States spends in excess of 700 billion per year on their military- The budge request does not account for "unforeseen" spending such as the  Military Aid which was given to Israel and with respect to its involvement in the ISIS crisis.  I am not sure why this information was not included in the commentary?

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Published

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News

Published

on

A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.

Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.

At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.

So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?

AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.
