Finally!! I hope moving parliament virtually will be something that stays after COVID-19 is over. It will massively help MPs who are parents and will help MPs lower their carbon footprint and expenses

Could you add a poll on the video? As all videos you ask a question and we should answer in the comment I feel it would be cool to have a YouTube poll as well

i liked the sun? express? 'no more backseat driving, let ministers make decisions without having to bother with telling the public' open campaign against democracy lol wonder if their readers noticed that?

They are going to have to avoid saying "here here!" all at once because it will bug out the zoom call XD

  8. @LuckGod84

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Going fully online in the future cuts down on the childlike shouting and jeering, cuts down on expenses of MPs travelling to London claiming 2nd properties there and meals. Seems like a good idea to me!
Once this is all over open up the house of commons to be a tourist attraction to make a bit of money

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Zoom has just been exposed for having its servers in China. Why don't we just allow the CCP to send representatives, and allow them to vote? Their Labour supporters are doing it for them already. Together, they might win.

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Due to the the fact that anything virtual well is, virtual, it comes with a high risk going virtual. I think this could be a stop gap and deferred balloting would be a very good way in these times. In the longer term having someone you can see and see cast their vote is better in Parliament.

  11. @matthewbaynham6286

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

There are 650 MP's (although SF don't sit and the speakers don't vote). If you have 50 MP's in the chamber and 120 online then that's only 170 MP's who have a voice, the majority of MP's will not be able to join. That is just stupid.

The technology to do video conferencing is not difficult, but it seems like it's beyond the UK's ability to produce it's own video conferencing solution that will allow all the MP's to join. What a country can't even get video conferencing right.

  14. @sarahemf

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

The ability of it being hacked is to great, I don’t care that it would normally be on tv. Reduce the numbers in attendance and start building a building that in the future can do physical distancing and allow people to sit down. I’ve seen videos of the room during brexit and even back then I thought you all needed to upgrade. With a bigger room that is able to have physical distancing as your country grows it should be able to accommodate everyone into the future.

Ok… Admittedly I'm a Yank so this is completely from an outsider's perspective but…

What in the name of all that's holy is this bucket of… manure?

If our elected officials were this chicken-sh*t I'd expect them to get recalled right away. Work from home? Might as well have had the wartime parliament just work by telephone and Churchill phone it in from Chequers rather than be in London during the Blitz.

Parliament, like Congress here in the US are elected to serve. Its a voluntary position with both perks and perils inherent to the job, just like firefighters, medical staff, police officers and military personnel.

What wonderful "leaders" you must have over there to be fearful of a virus with a 0.012 to 0.6% fatality rate enough to abandon their sworn duty to represent their constituents to the best of their ability. To this point in history there has never been an exemption to that for war or plague or natural disaster.

I guess laziness and fear trumps any sense of pride in achievement, sense of social duty, and stalwart leadership in the face of adversity.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

As long as the opposition/back-benchers can start calling the government out on their BS, I'll be happy. Getting a bit fed up of being treated like a mushroom by a government that cannot be properly scrutinised either by the press or parliament.

  34. @IsYitzach

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Zoom using non-standard encryption and sending data via China. What are they thinking? They should use standard encryption so that it is above reproach and should not get Chinese internet any more involved with anything any more than necessary.

  35. @DanielDaaar

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Why are they using ZOOM? It is NOT encrypted end to end AND has tires to the Chinese Government? ZOOM is currently banned for government use here in the USA.

    I like the thumbnail 🙂

  40. @zacktong8105

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Sounds like an excellent idea with protection provisions. The US Congress is moving in this direction though there has been some opposition to remote voting which would designate a member actually present to cast a vote for a member not present. This has also been proposed for committee hearings though the opportunity of the part of those representing Government to obfuscate answers arises when the member cannot persue a line of question when being given the run around.

  41. @nameless5413

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Fully virtual – long term plan,
Hybrid as explained makes sense for UK.

I would probably move away from suspicious programmes – i am not comfortably with any government using Z00m, Skype, ICQ or anything that widely distributed because most if not everyone can get their grubby hands on its code and poke holes in it.
There is plethora of available alternatives, and i am sure you could find a software solution that would be basically just private for government (maybe with additional server rack or even stack).

  42. @amira03

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

Lol 😂 what if someone hacks and caught them

  43. @saltypork101

    January 6, 2024 at 10:24 am

This is the future. MPs will be able to stay in their constituencies all the time. They'll actually do their jobs locally for a change. No more taxpayer funded second homes, and we can finally let the Westminster palace retire to become a tourist attraction rather than relying on it to be both beautiful and functional.

This MUST continue after the crisis.
