I have that knife for now maybe 5 years and love it:) that knife, a pairing knife, and shears are my only blades in my kitchen!

Wait, truffle "doesn't taste of much"?! Are you friggin high? I LOVE mushrooms, but truffles are the vilest, gawd awful tasting things I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. They absolutely "taste of much". White truffle specifically tastes overpoweringly of what you'd imagine from years old, never washed, dripping sweaty gym socks.

In Slavic countries you never gift a knife, it also goes for a sword. In a tradition it is believed that it cut ties.

I would suggest wrapping a card with a hint as to where the guanciale (or other perishable gift) is. I've given my brother smoked salmon this way before.

My mother had been using shitty off-brand el cheapo knives for her entire life. When I finally spent a decent amount of money to buy a good chefs knife for her birthday one year, it was like her entire life was turned upside down. Needless to say, she could never go back to el cheapo garbage knives after that!

It's almost time for another foodies gifts
@epowell4211
January 5, 2024 at 11:11 pm
Such a practical and fun list. I like the point made that, if you are gifting these items, you know the receiver is a foodie, and that makes a big difference. I know the importance of a good, reliable, instant read thermometer, and would realize that is a high quality, valuable one. If I gave that to my mom, she'd ask if I got it at the dollar store, toss it in a drawer, and continue cooking atrociously. Love the idea of giving the cookbook as well as taking them to the restaurant.

Watching this again,I don't know how I didn't notice it lol, but I love how the boys actually whispered in front of the knife after the reveal, and actually remained silent throughout the explanation!!

Buying Ben a Christmas gift seems like an unnecessarily troublesome task 😂 giving him a nice bottle of wine seems like a cop out, he’d appreciate herb seeds but that’s so boring and without sounding harsh it doesn’t seem like he really has much more in his life to use as inspiration 😂
@ethancampbell215
January 5, 2024 at 11:11 pm
I wonder what the guys buy each other for Christmas because surely they’re not gifting each other items related to the kitchen 😂 I’m sure the amount of time of their lives they dedicate to cooking and kitchen activities they must get sick of the topic and savour their time away from the channel’s demands
@ethancampbell215
January 5, 2024 at 11:11 pm
Buying a kitchen gadget or ingredient is such a risky gift for someone because I don’t think people would really be able to appreciate the gift and would be polite and thank you though gritted teeth even though you might think it’s a really good gift, if I opened up a high end meat probe I’d be really happy but nobody else in my family would appreciate it even though it would probably be used daily
@AmazingsLol

I have splurged on a 150 euro knife, which is by far my most expensive kitchen item, and I have found that you care for it automatically. I never leave it in water, always clean it immediately but I use it every single day. This was great advice, definitely worth the money!

That Thermapen gadget is WAY overpriced. I bought one off of Amazon for around $10-$12 and it's perfectly fine. Very accurate. I also have an infrared thermometer that I use in the kitchen that I paid $15 for on Black Friday, normally $20 and it is also perfectly fine.
Also, @16:45 Ebbers says "not sticking to the blade" as every slice of onion is sticking to the blade.

If you wait til you're middle-aged to buy that knife, the 25-year warranty means it would literally be the last knife you need to buy.

Bought the Mac 8" knife along with the pro paring and utility knives based on the recommendations of this video and they're awesome. They're also reduced significantly at the minute so worth getting if you're in the market for them, with the 8" at just £129 on the kitchen knives site. Thanks for the recommendation!

Who doesn't use a temperature probe? It's something i absolutely swear by when I'm cooking. Is that a carry over from professional cooking, or does it now make me an enthusiastic home chef? 🤔 in fact i have three of them now, all for different uses, and would love to get a set of meater wireless ones for longer cooks on the grill, in indirect heat.

Getting that Guanchale for £10 is insane in my mind, I couldn't even get half of that in normal cheap bacon for that price…

Until the last several years, I'd have never thought of any foodie gifts, other than gadgets, but today? I'D BE BESIDE MYSELF if I got Guanciale for Christmas or any other occasion, you'd converted me to full on foodie to the point I'm applying for financial aid to attend Escoffier's Culinary program online!

My sister mocked me for spending $120 on a WÜSTHOF Classic 8 Inch Chef’s Knife until she used it. I use it for almost everything except filet fish. a quality knife will make the biggest difference in the kitchen other than making sure your knives are sharp
@BillOweninOttawa

Most people will destroy a high carbon steel knife. There is no genuine or substantive advantage to a carbon steel knife. Get stainless.

All fish plants have people called "wormers". Guess what their job is? One of the reasons humans took over the world was the fact that we learned to cook our food thus killing worms, viri, and bacteria.
No thanks.

They said the white truffles couldn't be cultivated, but a research team did manage to harvest a crop of cultivated white truffles in 2019 and 2020. It's not easy since white truffles form a symbiotic relationship with a particular tree that they need to grow with. So you need to grow both the tree and the white truffle but it is doable and it is something that we will probably see more of over the next few years.

I have a brother who was in medical school in the US, he’s naturally a minimalist with little interest in having a lot of “stuff” and had to consider when he would move for his residency. Very hard to shop for.
Getting him a good quality chef’s knife was how I “won Christmas” that year.
