Can AI fashion models help shoppers cut clothes waste? – BBC News

Published

on

Digital fashion models created using artificial intelligence (AI) are being used to help shoppers with their choices and reduce clothes waste.

Physical clothing results in 100 million tonnes of waste every year, mostly because of customers sending things back.

But AI-designed digital models of different shapes, sizes and skin tones could help shoppers with their choices, according to Amsterdam start up La La Land.

There could also come a time when shoppers create avatars in their exact image too.

It is a convenient idea that it gives several customized choices and is also a cost effective strategy. I think this is quite promising in this present scenario .

That's just so close to cows websites you were working on and you know their reaction to that. Any dream you have here it does not end with smashing eggs and citrus fruits. Online shopping, but you probably afraid about it's size. How much do you understand about wool you are wearing on stage?

Not sure where the ai is being used here. How is this different from using a character builder on a game? Its just selecting predefined options and putting clothes on them…

You want less waste 👉 People need to actually try on!! I return 50 % of what I order online….. or give away !! Look .. Make at least one main clothing store people try & order .

These models are generalized sizes . It's more complex . I am a sz 14 very CURVY petite 5'2 .. .. My legs are long . AI can't do curvy because it has a unique shape. This is especially valid as a women has children

Bout time. No desire to buy anything that looks stunning on a size 1, 6 ft super model. Amazing it took this long for retail to catch up, but glad they have.

It takes time to upload clothes and model them. That will not happen any time soon. Same goes for sizes and their variables. Someone would need to have correct measurements of every style, in appropriate fabrics etc. Maybe a rough shape outline can help.

Brilliant. Being able to try garments on a virtual model of your body type and measurements could make a huge difference. But it would need to be quite accurate involving alot of variations for the AI, including materials and drape, etc.

My clothes are very old, my sweatshirts and pants are almost 15 years old, don’t buy much, investing in good quality clothes means durability,my jute shirt is being used by my daughter, my old clothes, shirts have given to my kid, nothing is wasted by this way.

  27. @markgonsalves

    January 4, 2024 at 5:49 am

Nop, the problem with clothing is rich people buy a dress and just wearing it once for 5 years and then throwing it in the trash instead of donating it or something. Atleast wear it for F sake. I don't think a 3D model can fix that. 😂

It creates solutions for many people, accesible, easy, cheap, which means it is likely to generate a wider market $ revenue.
There is a huge market worldwide to exploit from a software engineering perspective.

  32. @Jen-Yueh_Hu

    January 4, 2024 at 5:49 am

Or you can just stop making clothes that break down or decolourize after only 3 to 5 years so that people can wear them for longer.

America should ask Turkey to contact Russia to find a solution to end the war and bring a stable peace to Ukraine longly (such as allowing the recent successful export of wheat from Russia and Ukraine). Well then the world will be less miserable because of the lack of food and fuel and the risk of nuclear war

We can’t buy our way out of the climate crisis. This is cool tech, but it’s a little out of touch. It’s a tool to sell more stuff, not to mitigate waste.

you really have let your quality slip again. this is not you asking the great unknown of questions, this is on par to bored apes. you have to understand where this is going, the last 30 years of human activity and behavior has changed because admins can't run websites correctly, you have to understand that. there isn't a "world wide web" trust like there is with the bbc, you're addressing the world that is unregulated whilst the bbc; is regulated. i'll break it down further if you need this explaining to you.

I like the idea of this. no more discrimination of practically everyone on this Planet, Supermodels are supermodels full stop. this is their job. they parade in clothes for the public to buy. the public becoming depressed because of not looking the same as the parading shiny objects on the run way.
girls becoming anorexxic because of that .
very good idea= getting rid of supermodels.
Alternatively they could change and represent all body types and shapes in the future.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Published

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News

Published

on

A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.

Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.

At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.

So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?

AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.
