The By-Election That Could Shape Brexit – Brexit Explained

Published

on

Brecon and Radnorshire are headed to the voting booths tomorrow to cast a vote for their new MP. This vote has more significant than just a new MP though. If Johnson’s conservatives don’t win then they lose their working majority in the House of Commons (even with the DUP’s backing). If that happens then it suddenly becomes a whole lot harder for them to make to pass bills, especially in relation to Brexit. So Johnson won’t be pleased to see that polls put the Liberal Democrats in first place in this race.

So the Lib Dems won apparently. What next?

TLDR this video actually wrong. The majority for the government through its supply and confidence agreement with the DUP has reduced to 1 MP with a total of 320 MPs (310 Cons + 10 DUP). Were a rainbow alliance to occur the total number of MPs would be 319 (245 Lab, 35 SNP, 16 IND, 13 LD, 5 CHUK, 4 PC and 1 Green). There are a total of 11 MPs that do not vote (7 SF, 1 Speaker and 3 deputy speakers) hence a working majority of 320 required.

Why is teh news saying Boris Johnson has a working majority of 1, but you say he has no majority?

whaaaaaat? You say the UK needs to ……. work together when making plans? …. gasp ….

As opposed to 1 party pushing through whatever they fancy (and ohw, don't forget to reverse whatever the previous ruling party has done. That's an important part that shouldn't be forgotten ….. 😉 )

In the case of LibDem winning this seat, is it possible to form a government between them, the Labour party and all the other remainers/second referendum parties?

I like the videos and have watched a number since I stumbled upon this channel yesterday. For me, the backstories, asides and humour help to make an often complex narrative more easily understood. I feel sure that global viewers are particularly grateful. I've subscribed. Keep up the good work.

Wondering if rule applies in the Scottish parliament if so the whole lot of the SNP government should be expelled for robbing the Scottish people for the past twelve years.

  22. @islandletters

    January 2, 2024 at 12:11 am

Well, the LibDems won the by-election, but the Conservatives still hold a a majority in the Commons (albeit of only one MP, including the DUP votes). Something seems to be wrong with the MP attribution in your video.

  23. @ThomasAllen90

    January 2, 2024 at 12:11 am

You know, wanting more ways to remove your representatives outside of elections is anti-democratic.
    food for thought.

  28. @rounsterbout

    January 2, 2024 at 12:11 am

People did not vote cons because they did not like what they were about that is why they lost votes ??The next thing is when people realize what libs are doing they will go as well you wait and see>>>THE WINING PARTY WILL BE BREXIT if the governments do not give the people what they wanted and that was to leave with out a deal>>I think the libs think they have won ??you wait till the proper elections come you will see brexit will be brexit all the way if they do not sort things

  33. @user-hb7lc3tp3x

    January 2, 2024 at 12:11 am

If a general election were to be called this year, would this seat be contested or is there some exemption because of the very recent by-election?

  34. @frazzlol

    January 2, 2024 at 12:11 am

And the Lib Dems won the By-Election.

Hopefully we get these Tory bastards out soon.
