Rishi Sunak entered Number 10 with some truly terrible polling numbers, but despite a slow start the tide is turning. So… could Sunak turn things round? Could he become more popular & importantly could he beat Labour at the next election?

Is there possibility of getting a new party, honestly I trust neither Labour or Tories? If the Brits have looked history the two parties have caused quite a recession now and a decade ago. Plus, I believe people to some degree have the same interest like affordability, better living standards, free education, anti-privatization of public services and better management of public funds. I don't think every one is extremely left or right, we just need a party that can better our living conditions. The problem is how do we go on about making one, because the two parties we have for years would be replacing each other doing and undoing each other's works while getting paid according to inflation and more incentives. While the average brits are moving from rent to rent with a false hope that the next election will make things better. When in actuality it won't unless the upper middle class starting looking beyond their monetary interest which in this case both parties are not really different from each other. This is just sad, it's almost like we are in need of a revolution. Truly France is an inspiration at this point.

As long as the good people of the UK refer to theives as “conservatives”, nothing will change. Even Labour folks refer to the “conservatives”, it’s never the “Tories”…

Those who are sure Labour are going to win the next election(and by some distance) seem to be unaware of some very important facts.

The main reason Brexit happened and Boris won so many seats at the last election is because millions of people up and down the country see immigration as the most-important political issue.

Despite what's happened in the English Channel since 2010, come 2024, those said millions of people will still see the situation as being:

Labour want as many immigrants over here as possible, so have no interest in sorting out problems in The Channel.
The Tories aren't so keen on immigrants and will try their best to reduce the number of people coming over here.

Other things that need pointing out is that Murdoch still has power and no PM gets in without his backing. He will, of course, back Rishi at the next election.

The Tory-supporting Daily Mail's power can't be underestimated, given how big they've become in recent times.

Now let's get to Keir Starmer:

He certainly doesn't seem to be a popular charmer like Blair was.

I can't see those who lean slightly to the right falling in love with him and those who lean slightly to the left or majorly to the left aren't all sure to vote for his party because there are many people of that persuasion who are desperate for us to re-join The EU ASAP and Starmer is fully committed to staying out of The EU!

Don't get me wrong, I WANT Labour to win the next election but I think people are deluded if they think there's no possibilty of The Tories remaining in power after 2024.

I think this government represents the end of an era, not the beginning of a new one.
I feel England is maturing and part of that is realizing that we are indeed European. It's a hard lesson to learn. Other countries in Europe had to learn it the hard way. We've had to kind of figure it out ourselves. We will be back.
All thst English Nostalgia It's going to be impossible to sell to our kids. Nostalgia means pain in Greek. A longing to be home . For older people. That is another world. It is not a world Our children want to live in, they will find it very hard to see any benefit outside of the European mainland. Let's get over all this, move on and get stuck in with our neighbors.

If the Tories win the next election then I won't feel sorry for.anyone because this is the chance to get rid of them and put things right, no more Corbyn or Brexit selling-point to stand in the way anymore, so if anyone votes them in at this point they are just shooting themselves in the foot.

At this stage it looks like the best Rishi Sunak can hope for is limiting the damage done in a General Election. Currently there is a real danger for the Tories of not even being the main opposition party. So if Sunak manages to make the gains he at least can secure enough seats over the SNP. Of course and SNP/Lib Dem opposition coalition makes this harder but still doable in the 2 years.

  12. @zacksung11

    January 2, 2024 at 3:14 am

I say, let's see. Sunak has 2-3 more years to improve the economy and living standards before he calls an election. And that election will either be on December 2024 or January 2025. So let's see if Starmer will lead Labour to government, of if Sunak will give the Tories a Hail Mary pass.

Around 6:50 in the video, you suggest that tax rises (presumably on wages) and spending cuts (so austerity) are inevitable. Please be wary of using such language. We must remember that austerity is a political choice, not a natural inevitability. Avoiding this bias allows viewers to consider alternatives, like taxes on wealth.

It's because Labour love jumping on silly things to stick to. Such as saying Eddie Izzard is a woman. The average working class guy starting his shift at 7am and struggling to keep his head above water does not care about this nonsense. They are appealing to the 0.3% and tanking their favorability with working class voters

Labour just isn't providing an opposition. Rishi himself said as much, Labour keep talking and talking but are offering no solution. Both Conlab and Labcon voters have to be mad, as the sign of madness is to keep repeating the same thing and expecting a different result.
    Change your thinking.
Do you want to finish Brexit?
Do you want all the gains of Brexit?
Do you want to get rid of EU rules?
Do you want to bring back Ireland into the union?
Do you want to stop the rubber boats?
Do you want to leave the ECHR?
Do you want to start fracking?
Do you want to get back our fishing waters?
Do you want to stop the WEF from running us?
Do you want to escape net zero?
Then you cannot vote for Conlab or Labcons.
Then for this list and more
    ……Vote REFORM UK

  34. @adamsmithfrsa

    January 2, 2024 at 3:14 am

If you have always asked yourself "I can't believe people are so stupid to still vote Tory", please read this message, I will explain.

Historically, British people vote for Conservatives much more than any other party. And no, this is not because they are "old boomers", because the boomers that in 2019 voted for Boris because they wanted migrants out, most likely used to be the young hippies in the 70s and 80s that thought Margaret Thatcher was an idiot.

Simply, I think the Conservative party is the most successful party in the history of world politics. It survived centuries, constantly changing ideas to be up to date, despite the constant change in society and in needs. It's not your average right-wing party, most European right-wing parties are new and work only as a form of extremist protest (like UKIP was in the UK). But the Tories are not that. They have established themselves over centuries with the branding of the party of stability, the party that can change ideas like same-sex marriage or abortion, but will always prefer progressive change over sudden revolution, economic stability, and progress. In a way, it really is not a right-wing party at all. By most European standards, it's more of a centrist party.

Against the Tories, there has historically been the Labour party, which has as branding exactly the opposite: the party of revolution, anti-establishment, of structural and radical sudden change. Again, very different from the typical left of other European countries, which are more similar to the Tories in terms of view on stability than Labour is. For example, the Left in Italy is the party of the establishment, of keeping things as they are, while the right-wing party that just got in power now is the party of "let's change everything from head to toe".

Now, British people as a whole tend to vote for a party that promises stability, progressive change and not sudden and unstable revolutions. The ones who want big instant revolutions are usually young people, but as soon as people start a family, get some savings and buy a house, they tend to stop wanting to want a new October Revolution and start voting for the establishment.

And here we get to the main part of this: the Conservatives are historically very successful in promising (and usually delivering) economic stability and maintenance of the establishment. Usually, when Labour wins an election is because it shifted from the anti-establishment protest party (like Jeremy Corbyn's) to basically the Conservatives but red (Tony Blair's new labour, or Keir Starmer now).

Usually, the Conservatives are better at delivering stability, but after a while that they stay in power, they get cocky, divisive, and weak. Which is what happens now. Usually, what happens after is that a Labour government comes to power, and then usually acts like the Conservatives but a little bit more left-leaning, which means a good success for a long time (e.g. Tony Blair) as long as they keep stability. As soon as they start moving towards a more extremist agenda, they usually shake up the economy, and the Conservatives come back victorious, for another 10-15 years.

And this is what I think is going to happen: in 2024 Keir wins, will deliver some stability for a while, then to please the left-wing leaning electorate the party will start implementing some extremist measures, and the economy suffers, then the Conservatives will come back with a renewed, reinvigorated branding (currently lost) of the "party of economic stability".

Although, one thing is different from the past: the Conservatives have never been this bad with the economy. Usually, they are quite good with it. The reasoning behind this is quite complex, it's not just a simple "tory bad they did bad stuff". They have been in power in one of the most complicated times of history, when the British people (not really them as a party) voted Brexit, then in the Covid crisis and the economic aftermath of that. However, whether the conservatives are guilty or not, Labour now has a good opportunity to prove itself as the true party of economic stability. But I predict they won't, not at least in the long run.
