Taste Testing Edible Bugs & Insects | Alternative Proteins | Sorted Food

Published

on

Eating insects is generally seen as a pretty disgusting thing, especially in the western world…but what if it became more necessary and more of a norm? Things like cricket flour and mealworms are becoming more popular as a great source of protein. Would you give this kind of diet a go or is it a step too far?

I'd love to see huhu grubs tried (I might be missing some macrons) a grub from New Zealand that tastes very peanut butter-y and is delicious fried

You Brits can eat as many bugs as you want. I'll stick to a beautiful slab of methane producing cow.

Peel the water bug like a crab silly. Stop eating the exoskeleton that's the gross part. Insect exoskeleton taste like burnt hair because it's made out of the same compounds. Do you got your Cricket pull the head off legs and wings and just keep the larvae part. Mainly eat insect larvas and if we do it smart we can do this. Take a June bug and check it with tarantula Venom pull out the fluids strain the exoskeleton. Use cheese enzyme and reconstitute the protein. Hey science try to find a way to get rid of the bad tastes.

So how much food do the trillions of crickets need? or do they just magically appear at the factory ready to be ground up into flour. lmao The thermodynamic laws apply scammers. If it's not a scam go and launch it in India, Africa where millions are starving, instead of on all the working class.

I strongly believe that more cultures should start making the consumption of insects more of an accepted action as the global population is constantly rising and there will soon be a food shortage because it won’t be possible to feed everyone but insects are good protein sources and offer nutrients too so should be accepted like eating chicken or beef is

The reason so many countries eat bugs is because they can’t afford real meat

I genuinely think that if these were prepared in a traditional context, they'd be absolutely delicious. A lot of the bug protein stuff I see is more of a spin on a western dish, with added crickets or mealworms. If you just celebrate them within the cuisine they've been used in for hundreds of years, I think anyone could enjoy insects as part of a meal.

Nope, not me. When living in South Korea, I ordered a shrimp soup…love shrimp. But these were tiny and whole including antennae… couldn't eat it. Couldn't take the antennae in my teeth.

I think something we need to do more in the west is establish an appreciation for the cuisine from countries that eat insects.
If we can get a taste for that, it's a bridge to enjoying the recipes that have naturally evolved around eating insects.
We just don't know how to make them work as ingredients yet.

    January 1, 2024 at 3:06 pm

Pushing for humans to eat bugs is…inhuman. It's only funny on shows like this.

Guys, please stop buying the lie that bugs are a good alternative.

Mopani Worms! You can eat them dry & crunchie or cook them and eat them with (pap) porridge. Tastes green. Some cultures here in South Africa eat them regularly and some of us have only tasted them on occasion.

Have just listened to the audio discussion of (s4e5) on eating insects.
I have a question: Could they substitute some of the flour in a recipe for cricket flour ?

  24. @michaelsong5555

You need to state the most important factor when people make decisions when buying food — price.

This is what I have problem with — sure, bugs have higher protein and creates less gas, but what other stuff is in the bug? Not everything in the bug is good — is there something in the bug that can harm you? Or make your digestive system not work as well?

  26. @judithham2320

    January 1, 2024 at 3:06 pm

Kudos to you guys for being that brave! I would love to see an up-to-date video in regards, especially because Europe recently allowed a type of insect flour EFSA approved. Personally speaking, I do not think I can work my mind around to eat an integer insect, but a processed one which does not look like a bug? Absolutely.

  29. @hannavuorio83

    January 1, 2024 at 3:06 pm

I can’t even think eating insects, if other proteins wouldn’t be available, I would eat only plants🤷‍♂️

  30. @robopecha

    January 1, 2024 at 3:06 pm

i watched it to get a description of what it tastes like. so i can at least try to imagine the taste. but nothing. dont waste my time like this!

  32. @kamanama3671

you have to chop up the meal worms before putting it in something. You don’t put mealworms in whole. That’s just cruel.

  35. @colin101981

    January 1, 2024 at 3:06 pm

Noooo! Sorry, there are other sources of protein that are not animal or insect based. I COULD NOT eat a bug – no disrespect to those cultures who have embraced it but I personally couldn't. If I had to radically change my diet, I'd be more inclined to go plant based. Thanks for covering this subject though guys.
