Moment judge recognised school friend in dock – BBC News

Published

on

Watch the amazing moment when two school friends, a judge and a man suspected of burglary, were ‘reunited’ briefly during a court hearing in Miami, US. “I’m sorry to see you here,” said Judge Mindy Glazer. “I always wondered what happened to you.” Standing in the dock, Arthur Booth, who was arrested after he was chased in a car by police, broke down in tears when he recognised his former class-mate. Judge Glazer set Mr Booth’s bond at $43,000 (£27,500).

“But if an angel from heaven appears— a special messenger to intercede for a person and declare that he is upright— he will be gracious and say, ‘Rescue him from the grave, for I have found a ransom for his life.’

"Then his body will become as healthy as a child’s, firm and youthful again. When he prays to God, he will be accepted. And God will receive him with joy and restore him to good standing. He will declare to his friends, ‘I sinned and twisted the truth, but it was not worth it. God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light.’

“Yes, God does these things again and again for people. He rescues them from the grave so they may enjoy the light of life."

I have a friend like this. Was my fake husband in school then robbed and murdered a guy. Found him online "fighting for his life" (he got life) and when I commented on the post he freaked out and had the person running it shut it down. It's like they remember when they weren't scum all of a sudden. So far removed from that time.

I went to court and the bailiff was a girl I dated. When I got to my cell, the c.o. was a guy I worked out with. Before I got released (thank God it was only a 30 day sentence) the social worker asked to see me and it was a girl who was a friend of the family. I thought "damn, it's a small world!" Lastly, when i got my record expunged, I'd gone to college with the judge. I've had no more brushes with the law since. Been clean now for over 12 years!

Mission blasts off to Mars to grab a piece of its moon | BBC News

Published

on

A spacecraft has launched from Japan headed for Mars’s moon Phobos, where it will attempt to grab some moondust and bring it back to Earth.

If it is successful, it will become the first time a sample has been returned from Mars or its moons to be analysed in laboratories here on Earth.

The spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Phobos in August 2027.

It is hoped that the Mars Moons Exploration (MMX) mission, which is led by the Japanese Space Agency, will solve the mystery of how Mars’s moons formed.

What’s it like being a cat? BBC News

N.B. Certain parts of this film don’t have any audio. Cats are at a crucial point in their evolutionary journey as they transform from solitary hunters to domestic pets, a study by the BBC and the Royal Veterinary College has revealed. Our felines are adapting quickly to life in densely-packed cities, changing their behaviour to fit in with our 21st Century lives. They are time-sharing territory with other cats, killing less prey and learning to communicate with each other and people, research for BBC Two’s Cat Watch 2014 found. In the first of a three-part series on the lives of modern domestic cats, we look at how our pets experience the world.

Hiding in Dubai: The VAT fraudster who stole from you – Behind The Investigation | BBC News

Published

on

Where is convicted fraudster, Arif Patel?
Criminals defrauding the tax system costs the UK billions of pounds in lost revenue each year.
The BBC’s File on 4 Investigates tells the story of one of the country’s most prolific tax fraudsters, who stole tens of millions of pounds of public money and seemingly got away with it.
In 2023, Arif Patel, from Preston, Lancashire, was convicted of attempting to steal more than £90m of public money and was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
The judge described Patel as being ‘breathtakingly arrogant’ and ‘totally dishonest’.
But Patel wasn’t there to hear this condemnation and he hasn’t served a single day of his sentence because he fled to Dubai more than a decade ago.

In this episode of BBC News: Behind the Investigation, Melanie Stewart-Smith speaks to journalist Ben Robinson, who tells the story of how he got onto the trail of the fugitive fraudster who stole from all of us.
