It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.

Jo subverting the leader of the opposition to try to lead a government of national unity against parliamentary convention, in order to look better for the general and deny Labour political points, is incredibly petty. Whatever you have to say about Corbyn's motivations here, and if they were perfectly pure, his best move may be to just step back and let the political gamesman have it in the interest of the long-term (though the risk of yet another Labour mutiny against the clear wishes of their own electorate, and the disruption to the anti-no deal camp that would ensue bears consideration), the leader of the opposition is the natural person to lead a national unity government. If just Corbyn were trying to make a game of it, then sure, the Lib Dems could have it, but the Lib Dems are definitely making a game of it, and Labour actually has principled reasons other than being the opposition to take charge. Namely, again, a Labour mutiny would be really bad right now, because the Liberal Democrats cannot just absorb Labour support in the chaos like they seem to think they can. The whole thing might wind up handing Boris a majority over a split vote.
@theJACKATIC
December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
How can you have a government of national unity without any brexiteers. The plan is laughable.

Why are y'all so afraid of no deal?? The UK should turn their focus to the US and just jump!
@DelfinaKS
December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
Corbin should become prime minister and go to EU to ask for an extension only for France to block it. That will be hilarious!!!

December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
I love how your politicians are ignoring the will of the people. They don't want the EU. And the more you push it the more they are for no deal. As usual the issue here is that the EU is STILL trying to force the UK to remain part of the EU. If you are to follow the will of the people and finally leave no deal is the only way. Not becaue it is best for the EU or the UK. But because the EU have zero regard for the UK's soverignty.
The EU was made for trade. They have zero right to try and force Countries to become a Federation. Thier obsession with this is EXACTLY why the UK wanted to leave in the first place.
@Chris44sun
December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
Britain. The government cant govern, the currency is nosediving and the people would rather shoot the entire country in the face than have more funny accents.

December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
Corbyn's plan sounds a little unhinged/unplanned, no Corbynite manoeuvre for this guy he's not James T Kirk.
It's clear that there will be an election either before or after a no deal brexit, Corbyn has zero chance of winning.
Hillary and Shorten were a lot more popular at least in their own parties, they were defeated.
Corbyn's got zip support in his own party.
Labour will be defeated at the general election and will more likely then have to support a Liberal Democrat/independent/minority parties coalition.
What does Corbyn do then, threaten another no confidence motion in partnership with the Tories/Brexiters?
UK politics is barking mad.
Brexit is a barking mad idea.

So Merkel says no renegotiation of the Deal!! That leaves Britain with No Deal Brexit!! So what is Corbin mumbling about?? A Daffy Duck Deal that will never happen?? Disney Land?? Fantasy in his brain?? Move toward himself as a PM of Nonsense?? He cant get a cushy EU job because Ex PM may has got that nailed down!! So Corbin is on a hostile mountain without the right gear!!

@sahhull

We should already be out of the EU. The majority of people who voted, voted to leave the EU. There was not mention of leave with a deal.

If I'm going to choose an option then I am prepared for every eventuality.
How is UK not prepared for a No Deal Brexit?
Stop whining about the EU not giving you a better deal and stop trying to blame the EU for a no deal. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't, Brexit was a gamble, don't blame the other player, you can always fold and walk away.
@fod3er
December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
If the Tories loose a Confidence vote could they not call a general Election straight away? Parliament is dissolved and remainers by there own hand remove any chance of stopping brexit.

Corbyn's goal should be to just nullify Brexit and remain because even if he wins and gets an extension what can he possibly change in the deal to make it more appealing to the EU and parliament?

Sure, a no deal Brexit might be a bit tough to begin with, but it wont take long for the benefits of being out of the EU to kick in, whereas a Corbyn led socialist government will turn this country into a hell hole for years to come.
@notroll1279
December 31, 2023 at 3:39 pm
If Corbyn waa serious about preventing a No Deal, he would either support a non-Labour candidate who would be acceptable to more than half the MPs – or he'd step down from Labour leadership and give way to a centrist candidate planted in 21st century reality.
If he sticks to his pipe dream of becoming PM, he'll not only be disappointed to fail in that objective – future young left-wing citizens and voters will also hold him responsible for allowing No Deal Brexit to proceed.
