What could ‘voice cloning’ technology mean for society? – BBC News
In January 2023, ElevenLabs released a trial version of its AI speech software intended for dubbing movies.
Given a minute of a person speaking, the software can quickly put together a ‘clone’ of that person’s voice.
It went viral, with the public using the technology to clone the voices of celebrities and politicians.
The BBC’s James Clayton investigates the impact voice cloning technology could have on society – from scams to the 2024 US election.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News
Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.
Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.
At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.
So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?
AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.

I also have difficulty finding ' good ' uses for such a thing. I also recently came across articles talking about using voice cloning and attempting to scam people pretending to be a relative or somebody they knew. Yeah , still scratching my head about what good there might be.

The question is, can it depict emotions? Or is it always a bland voice like someone reading from a prepared statement that they have no investment in? Until the voices can show emotions, there will always be a lot lacking.

WOW someone could use this technology to make it seem as if Donald Trump said something intelligent, the wonders of technology… Kinda depressing that people are using it for racist hate speech but I guess that bigotry and stupidity never go out of fashion.
I guess this will mean that court cases using recorded phone/VOIP conversations that this evidence's validity can be plausibly doubted.

Regulation. Is the only way to prevent a massive problem. Each AI should have a specific regulation based on its capabilities, eg. Voice clone, image generator, content development, and more… that will help to start shaping the correct path instead of leaving it open. Technology will be used for the good and bad, we need to increase chances to be used for the good and aways try to reduce the bad for zero.
