Ukraine finds British WW2 Hurricane planes outside Kyiv – BBC News

Published

on

Eight British Hurricane fighter planes dating back to World War Two have been found buried in a forest in Ukraine.

The aircraft were sent to the Soviet Union by Britain after Nazi Germany invaded the country in 1941.

They were part of a package of allied military support for the USSR, paid for by the United States under the so-called Lend-Lease scheme.

Similar legislation is being used by the US government today to send military aid to Ukraine as it seeks to expel Russian forces from its country.

Seems a bit rotten. The USA pays for air craft to help and then Russia buried it to keep from paying for it.

The brits gave the Soviets military aid and they won. Ukraine is receiving military aid from Britain and every Victor of ww2. Just another reason why Ukraine will win

They gave (loaned) these aircraft to the Soviet Union, not Ukraine!

The irony of the yellow backed British who pretend to support “ our boys in WW2 against the Germans. Now they support Ukrainian nazis against the heroic Russians who in WW2 killed 70% of Germans. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Russians otherwise we’d be speaking German. Our Grandfathers would be turning in their graves listening to the traitors on here supporting the Ukrainian nazis. The US overthrew the democratic leadership in 2014 in Ukraine and killed 14,000 of its own people who sided with Russia. Now Zelensky the US puppet and dictator bans opposition media and parties and its opponents somehow disappear.. mmm sounds like Germany 1939. Thank Putin the only leader to protect us from nazism. Well done for annihilating the dirty Ukrainian fascists, 350,000 of them and counting. 🇬🇧 🇷🇺 ❤❤❤

The Hurricanes were not "given to the Ukraine to fight an invading army " . They were supplied to the Soviet Union ruled at the time by Stalin .

War barely over and the Ruᛋᛋians are already looking at further ways to screw over the collective west who generously helped them defeat the Nazis from the East, and then ironically learning how to become Nazis themselves over the years to ethnic cleanse and persecute other nations in the same way, Slava Ukraine and Kick them Ruᛋᛋian Nazis out of Ukraine back to their beloved 19th century homelands, with mud for roads, outside pit toilets and love of oppression from their corrupt leaders. @01:42 Landale makes an outrageous claim that these Hurricanes were paid for by the USA. THEY WERE NOT. When this was reported in the BBC News website I wrote a formal complaint but have had no reply.

Everything the UK sent to the Soviet Union was supplied Free of Charge under a specific UK law. Even some aircraft that the USA sent to the Soviet Union under their Lend Lease deal with them had to be replaced by the UK to the USA. On the 16th April 1946 the new PM Clement Attlee gave the following answer:

"In the period from 1st October, 1941, to 31st March, 1946, we supplied to the Soviet Union 5,218 tanks, of which 1,388 were from Canada. We supplied 7,411 aircraft, including 3,129 aircraft sent from the United States of America. As previously explained on the 10th May, 1944, the aircraft from the United States of America were sent on United States Lend Lease to the Soviet Union as part of the British commitment to the U.S.S.R. in exchange for the supply of British aircraft to United States Forces in the European Theatre"

In addition to those aircraft and tanks we sent:
    27 naval vessels

    5,000+ anti-tank guns

    4,020 ambulances and trucks

323 machinery trucks (mobile vehicle workshops equipped with generators and all the welding and power tools required to perform heavy servicing)

1,212 Universal Carriers and Loyd Carriers (with another 1,348 from Canada)

    1,721 motorcycles

£1.15bn ($1.55bn) worth of aircraft engines

    1,474 radar sets

    4,338 radio sets

600 naval radar and sonar sets

    Hundreds of naval guns

    15 million pairs of boots
All free of charge and nothing to do with the UK Lend lease deal.

Hurricanes never came from the USA as they were entirely British. So the idea they were buried to escape Lend Lease bills is utterly wrong. What is even worse to me is that the BBC is happy to mislead people about all this as part of their lip service to the USA. It insults what our country did 2 weeks after Barbarossa while we were fighting for our survival and worse it insults our Greatest Generation.
    Utterly sickening!

Counter terrorism police now leading investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s death | BBC News

Published

on

Counter terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, after “new information and evidence has come to light”, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has said.

“The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said.

A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday but has now been re-arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”, CTPSE said.

Police said the “dynamic and complex investigation” had led to the new arrest.

On Thursday, 78-year-old Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, having sustained serious injuries.

Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay on as prime minister as the pressure mounts | BBC News

Published

on

Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.

Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.

No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.
