Mike deserved the badge
Barry just didn't
Jamie.. shouldn't have got one because although he made the meringue he did it too early

I think the challenge was an all around pass. It was a merengue challenge, not a baking challenge or desert challenge, and you all made a great looking merengue. 😊

Barry's badge here was a sympathy badge. He did not really contribute to the actual meringue at all.

Jamie definitely 1st
Mike 2nd
Barry 3rd – he definitely failed
And for that reason it's a fail!

Yes I think as the Sorted community were all in agreement that James was generous in handing out the meringue badges to a person who didn’t actually touch the meringue in production, preparation or serving 😂 but they were all a team and it was Barry’s idea to make the meringue the star of the show in the dish rather than a topping which was maybe why he got the badge. To be honest I liked the twist of changing course from a tart to a baked Alaska because the components were there to achieve the end result by observing the environment and at the same time multi tasking by seeing how to contribute to the final dish.
Also can we give props to Jamie thinking ahead and working as a team by preparing the meringue in a piping bag for Mike to just come in the kitchen and pipe to finish the dish, he evidently had some form of vision even though he didn’t know what the dish was and helped Mike achieve that by setting up for him. It’s so refreshing seeing them work as a team in PIO because with a lack of communication, their teamwork has to be so much better to make up for the lack of verbal communication, so physical hints that help the teammate figure out what’s happening is showing teamwork and altruism. It was so frustrating watching the guys in the comfort food PIO when they made chicken wings and waffles, Ebbers changed the dish to a fish pie mix through fear that the oil wasn’t hot enough to cook the wings and produced a safe edible dish, but the frustrating thing about this wasn’t the fact that Jamie cooked four wings to perfection, it was the fact that Ebbers chose to take the dish down a rabbit hole because even though Mike and Barry referenced they needed to get the oil on to start heating up, Barry in the 4th go out of 8 turns and then Mike in the 5th turn referencing the oil needed to go on, finally starting to heat up a pan of oil in the 6th go, with only 12:30 for the oil to become hot enough to cook the chicken through to the bone and be safe, they didn’t think like a team then and didn’t follow the logical steps to making the dish, because they knew they wanted deep fried chicken wings, but didn’t heat up any oil to deep fry them. There was no logic, too much panic and no teamwork, and they’re lucky Ebbers despite making a claim about it being much more of a team effort, saved the group with a guaranteed edible judgeable dish, because although Jamie cooked the wings well, they’d need time to drain from all that oil and grease unless they were happy with a greasy waffle, so the chicken wouldn’t have made it anyway and Ebbers might have been slated by the guys for turning a chicken wings meal into the dish he goes on and on and on about, always finding a way to say that a fish pie is his favourite pie, but at least he provided something that was edible and cooked rather than a greasy potentially raw or undercooked chicken wing, because there was no teamwork, no fluidity in actions after the potatoes were dealt with, which was probably the highlight of their work because they were going to be boring rostis and made into a lovely crispy waffle which is so much more comforting hitting the brief through I believe Ebbers creativity and luck that the waffle iron was sitting on the bench that day. But I guess the point I’m making through all this is that it was a lovely watch this meringue video because it was nice seeing the guys work as a team, in a task where they have no communication yet are all working to the same goal, they need to work together as well as they can, and it was refreshing seeing them try to achieve that. We so often see them panicking and rushing because they don’t enter the kitchen with a level head and it ends up resulting in carnage, a huttlestorm brewing seconds after the huttlestone enters the kitchen but watching Barry check the oven, then the fridge and then examine what’s going on on the bench and not worrying or rushing just getting to grips with what’s at hand was a breath of fresh air, maybe the chefs are holding the normals back because I’m sure everytime the chefs leave the kitchen and the normals take over there’s a lot more energy, a lot more passion, a lot less composure mind you but also a lot more experimentation. The chefs that go on camera on the Sorted channel have a fantastic repertoire of skills and knowledge, and can identify and describe tastes and scents like Ray Hudson describing a Lionel Messi goal, the depth of knowledge and passion they show for their field of specialty is wonderful to watch, and it’s a brilliant platform for introducing themselves to a massive diverse community who are all amazing. There are some truly amazing people in this community, thank you to the guys for bringing us together and continuing to entertain us, I wouldn’t change a thing about the channel except the sub count because the effort and expertise on show is worthy of more than 100million, I can wait for the day we get to see some plaques hanging in the background of the Sorted studio as a badge of honour for the effort and work that has resulted in a prestigious reward which has well and truly been earned, I can’t speak any more highly of this channel, I recommend it to everyone I know and in the process of bringing so many different people together, teaching and educating us with tips, tricks and techniques without having to manually learn ❤ amazing channel, amazing cast, stupendous community ❤

I love watching the videos where the chefs observe the normals with very minimal input, like James only deciding the order, because it allows them to see the normals thought processes in challenges where there is either a time limit or communication issues like a budget battle or Pass It On. It allows them to educate us all on the ‘mistakes’ that the normals make when they’re left to create a dish without the support of a chef or two and how they are prepared to influence the dish and work as a team, or lack of those skills. Also allows the chefs to understand each of the normals trains of thought when in the kitchen when they’re in a Pass It On because they’re able to adapt what they do by improvising what they bring to the table, like James knows now that Jamie knows that the start of a Swiss meringue is sugar and egg whites over a Bain Marie so should be comfortable leaving that for him and allows him to create without the worry of the normals following not knowing what he is attempting to execute in his 10 minutes without the normals panicking or ruining it, although I can’t defend the horrific creation from the Brunch episode 😂😂 how home fries that James envisioned turned into a spicy jumble of uncooked potato and pepper and god knows what because of communication issues doesn’t help the point I’ve made 😂😂 the normals have definitely improved over the course of the growth of this channel but these challenges really show the gap between the chefs and normals in terms of skill and creativity on the spot with ingredients at hand and what’s already been prepared 😂😂 the normals are definitely a step above the average home cook but they still exhibit their normal habits and tendencies on a regular basis, I feel sorry for Barry because he’s evidently the least skilled when it comes to composure, but shows his skills frequently yet his mishaps are always highlighted by the others, like in the Vegan Xmas Pass It On, because honey is hotly debated as to whether it is vegan or not and him using it meant he got slated by the comments and the other 3 guys, he was set up by the food team knowing it wouldn’t be counted as vegan, had the knowledge and confidence to balance the dish by adding sweetness but chose what turned out to be the ingredient that led to his demise, despite his time in the kitchen being relatively successful, in comparison to Jamie’s vegan pigs in blankets that video alone and the panic that often makes Mikes 10 minutes almost useless because he spends 8 minutes panicking and complaining that the current objective is too cheffy, he’s skilled enough to carry it on because he’s inventive and creative but generally spends the last 2 minutes starting to add something to the dish, time runs out and leaves an unspecified vision for someone to work out subsequently often meaning his idea isn’t carried on and his 10 minutes only acting as cooking time for whatever has already been started prior to his go. I’ve commented on another video that Mike needs to start loving himself more and being more self confident because he often underscores himself in challenges and dismissed his achievements in battles, he’s evidently very skilled and intelligent but doesn’t believe in himself as much as he should, but I will admit that he often flaps and panics when all he needs is a level head, spend a couple of minutes getting to grips with what’s on the table, in the oven or fridge, on the job or on the chopping board for him, think while he’s progressing what’s there and add something because he can multitask, we know he can but I guess it’s the pressure of PIO that brings the worst version of Mike. His cauliflower ‘not cheese’ in the vegan xmas PIO is the perfect example of his ability and knowledge, he knew what he wanted to do, did all the elements in a logical order by soaking the cashews before sticking the cauliflower in the pan and getting the smash powder after doing that, he’s smart and talented with a level head but I don’t think we see that enough, I suppose the live shows don’t help that either because I can’t imagine how much pressure he must feel when he’s faced with the same scenario he’s often put in but instead of being surrounded by a group of his friends he’s got upwards of 50,000 strangers who are watching him panic and suffer, he wants to entertain them seeing as they all spent money to see the show so doesn’t want it to be boring but he would be better off in the studio just assessing what’s already there while he thinks, rather than panic, flap and complain about the ‘cheffiness’ of the stuff prepared already and only having 10-25% of his time to act, we’ve watched Ebbers and James enough times to see that they enter the kitchen by scanning the tables available ingredients, then checking pans, ovens and the fridge for already executed ideas Ames while thinking how can I improve this component of the dish as well as what can I add to the dish, that’s if anything is needed to be added because sometimes less is more if each person tries to add something that runs the risk of putting 5 things on a plate which puts the dish in danger of becoming cluttered, so less is more in many instances, and so the chefs act in quick and decisive actions that more often than not improve the overall result by enhancing the ingredients that have already been started and adding ingredients using their superior technique and vision of the final plate to add what is more often than not the star component of the plate, or the component that adds the final piece of the puzzle, like a bit of crunch for texture on the dish or a bit of sourness in a sweet dish to create balance, and that’s what I think Mike is capable of doing, he just needs to believe in himself a bit more and enter the kitchen with a level head rather than being flappy panicky Huttlestone😂

I feel like Barry's ego is his and the groups worst enemy. When he keeps it in check and tries to work with the group the create some great Pass It On, but when he doesn't he usually throws out stuff that could've been good and goes on weird ways that just confuse the rest. And then he goes on and rates himself usually more than 5/10 which is infuriating to watch.
I like that James gave them feedback on their points.
@alleycaaat
December 29, 2023 at 8:40 pm
This is another example of why I would detest doing this with barry and why I feel bad for the others. He does whatever TF he wants and disregards how it impacts others, that's quite selfish. You can see at the end how he reacts to James giving Mike a (well deserved!) 8, because he saved the dish after it was just derailed after Jamie and Mike's efforts. And baz didn't actually MAKE anything, other than a fiasco for the others to clean up. Mike did brilliant, and often does, but is so hard on himself and doesn't give himself enough credit. He needs to borrow some arrogance I think.

Barry really shouldn't have gotten a badge, he didn't make anything, and messed up the idea, as always not assessing things well enough and going for something that realistically doesn't fit the situation and needs more time.
To be fair to him, the base shouldn't have been left for the middle of the time slot because it needs more setting time, Jamie made a mistake by starting with the meringue. Always build from the ground up, not go for sth just because you want to. They do the same thing in a recent desert video where none of them make a sponge.
