BBC is anti-vegan. They are always producing videos that don't clarify much their business as confusion just like the campaign in favor of cigarettes or keeping up oil production. But the videos are very refined and is sneaky about it.

Can't agree. Its sad that bbc is producing these videos! The reporter is pretty biased. She somehow wants to prove that being a vegan is the only way to save environment. She is not even quoting the source of the studies she mentioned. Planet earth contains both animals and plants. There is nothing wrong in consuming animals. If you are thinking that consuming animals is the sign of lack of humanity, then consuming plants is also the sign of lack of humanity. I hope bbc won't produce such failed videos in the future.

as a french vegan, i only consume soy that comes from france. if i was eating meat, i would eat animals who themselves ate soy that comes from the amazon rainforest. so if u want to lower ur impact on deforestation, eat products that come from your own country and not from the rainforest! the huge majority of lands created by cutting down the trees in amazonia, is made to grow soy for the animals. the soy grown for vegan products aren't grown there as i said, so it's the opposite, by being vgean you lower/stop this amazon soy production that is so bad

    1. **Sustainability**: Veganism promotes a more sustainable food industry by reducing the environmental footprint. Plant-based diets typically require fewer natural resources like water, land, and energy compared to animal agriculture, ultimately contributing to a more eco-friendly industry.

    2. **Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions**: The livestock industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to a vegan diet, the demand for meat decreases, resulting in lower emissions and a positive impact on climate change mitigation.

    3. **Animal Welfare**: Veganism encourages a shift towards a more compassionate food industry by reducing the demand for animal products. This, in turn, minimizes animal suffering and promotes the adoption of ethical and humane farming practices.

    4. **Health Benefits**: Plant-based diets have been linked to numerous health benefits, such as lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. A healthier population means reduced strain on the healthcare industry and its resources.

    5. **Biodiversity Conservation**: Animal agriculture often contributes to deforestation and habitat destruction. By embracing a vegan lifestyle, we can help preserve natural habitats and protect biodiversity, benefiting both wildlife and the overall ecosystem.

    6. **Water Conservation**: Plant-based diets generally require significantly less water compared to diets that include animal products. This reduction in water usage can alleviate pressure on water resources, particularly in regions prone to drought.

    7. **Food Security**: Shifting towards a vegan food industry allows for more efficient use of food crops. Instead of feeding crops to animals for meat production, these resources can be directed towards human consumption, potentially alleviating world hunger and ensuring food security for all.

    8. **Economic Efficiency**: As the demand for plant-based alternatives grows, the food industry can invest in research, development, and production of innovative vegan products. This diversification can lead to economic growth and new job opportunities within the industry.

    9. **Waste Reduction**: Veganism can contribute to reducing food waste. Plant-based foods often have longer shelf lives and are less prone to spoilage compared to animal-based products, leading to less waste and a more efficient food supply chain.

    10. **Promoting Innovation and Diversity**: The rise of veganism stimulates innovation in the culinary and food production sectors, encouraging a diverse range of products and cooking techniques. This fosters creativity within the industry and caters to a growing demographic of consumers seeking plant-based options.

the answer is YES. is that really so difficult to say? Feeding animals to then feed you costs more land, water, and all other resources. 99%of all soy produced is used as FODDER for animals. fuck sakes. This is easily found and that's why the UN suggest a plant based diet. Get your facts straight BBC.

What about the other implications of eating animal products?
They are sentient beings. They feel, they love, they have maternal and paternal instincts, they experience life, they feel pain, they get scared, they are social, they are friendly and more. Animals are someone, not something. Do most people really know that little male chicks are ground alive or go to the gas chamber on their first day of life? Do people know that a normal chicken In the wild would only lay eggs during the breeding season, totaling just 10-15 eggs per year? The use and abuse of this sentient being is nothing short of mind-boggling! Do people know what debeaking is? Do people know that when a chicken is no longer "profitable", it is dragged upside down in an electric bath, then decapitated? Does anyone want to know about pigs and cows and gas chambers and bolts through their heads? What do people really know about the dairy industry? Does anyone care?

Veganism is the natural choice of environment protection. Artificial choice is by LAW to stop animal / bird breeding. Artificial ways dont work well because of illegal trades. Hence it is better to seek natural ways. Without slaughtering cows, the milk products from them can be converted to high energy meals by scientific knowledge, but such a process needs a country full of grasslands & meadows. People in deserts / arid regions often eat what they get (animals/birds/foods etc) dont know the AUSPICIOUSNESS OF NICE WEATHER.

UK people really have good civic consciousness and strong sense of justice. After all, their recycling rate is 26% which is 1/3 of South Korea. They insist on vegan for their own health and emotional interest but don't give a shit about other people's opinion especially when their race is inferior (not white). What a thoughtful gentleman.

You don't say how many animals are harmed in the clearing of the amazon for soya bean production. Or how you keep insects from eating your crop, or mice, voles, fieldmice, and other so called vermin who if left unchecked would eat through all that luscious vegetation. You brush it all under the carpet. The sheer multitudes of animals, mammals and insect, birds and wildlife in general harmed by planting more crops to cater to the expansion of veganism make vegans only one or two livestock animals less guilty of the sheer mass killing requires to sustain their lifestyle choices.

What is often not stated is that two thirds of agriculture land are marginal land, meaning that crops cannot grow there. If we were all to turn vegan two thirds of agriculture land would simply be left to rot. Ruminants help to ensure the health of grasslands. Without ruminants, entire ecosystems will die off.

  43. @macalienx

    December 26, 2023 at 10:13 pm

So… Quinoa is not a product that is only consumed by vegans… Maybe there is more consumption because of a heathy style diet. I am vegan and I only consume quinoa occasionally. And how many vegans are in the world? Will that small percentage be responsable for that amount of quinoa production? So itĀ“s a poor argument against the impact of a ā€œveganā€ diet (Veganism is not a diet but a movement against animal explotation, strict vegetarianism is the diet of a vegan) …

About the soy, the number of animals that consume soy is far larger than the human population and certainly they consume larger quantities that us… so I guess is not a good argument against veganism eighter.

And people should not forget that beside all the advantages that veganism brings on health and environment, it“s essence is being against the exploitation and abuse of animals.

  48. @niteblaster1

    December 26, 2023 at 10:13 pm

Plant-based diets require great amounts of quality soil in which to grow those plants.
    Without animal faeces there
    Would be no natural fertiliser,
Soils act as a home for greenhouse gases, and when they are constantly being plowed and turned over to plant crops, this churning releases greenhouse gases that would otherwise be trapped in healthy soils.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
